Young faces in Indian Team for Hero Hockey World League Final

New Delhi, 8 January 2014: Indian Men Hockey team is announced for the forthcoming Hero Hockey World League Final Delhi 2014 to be played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi from 10-18 January 2014.

Mid-fielder Sardar Singh, who has 174 international caps, will lead the team and Goalkeeper P R Sreejesh (88 International Matches) will be the vice-captain of the 18 member squad, which includes young players like Harjot Singh (Goalkeeper), Affan Yousuf.

Affan was in stand-bys for Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013, where India finished at 10 place, while Harjot Singh, Amit Rohidas, Kothajit Singh, Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh were part of the Indian Junior Men’s Team for the world cup. Danish Mujtaba, who was called for the camp after a surgery, is not included while Yuvraj Walmiki is recalled in the team after staying wilderness for more than a year. Continue reading →

ONGC and Mumbai XI Win in Surjit Hockey

Jalandhar 15 October 2013: ONGC defeated Punjab National Bank by 5-0 in Pool B in Quarter Finals League stage of the 30th Servo Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today, while Mumbai XI beat Indian Overseas Bank 7-5 to finish the tournament on high note.

The team of ONGC needed a win to stay on track for the place in Semi Finals, and they outclassed the PNB who had won their previous match against BSF.

In the 8th minute of match International player Diwakar Ram converted a penalty corner to open the scoring for his team. In the 10th minute of the play ONGC’s Bikash Toppo netted the ball from right flank to double the lead. In the 17th minute of the play Preetinder Singh scored field goal with reverse stick from top of the circle to make it 3-0 in favour of ONGC. Continue reading →

Sandeep Singh and Yuvraj Walmiki Recalled for Netherlands Tour of Indian Men’s Hockey Team

New Delhi, 26 April 2013: Indian Men’s Hockey Team for Netherlands tour from 27 April – 9 May 2013 is announced. The 18 member Indian squad will be captained by Sardar Singh and VR Raghunath will be vice captain.

The Indian team will be traveling to Netherlands to play a total seven matches in preparations for the Senior Men team for FIH Men’s Hockey World League Round- 3(Semi-finals) to be played at Rotterdam, Netherlands from 13-23 June 2013.

Two new additions in the 22-member Squad for Europe tour

Goalkeeper Bharat Chetri has been retained captain and Sardar Singh will continue as vice-captain of 22 member Indian hockey squad for the upcoming European tour, which will see the debut of Nitin Thimmaiah and Pradhan Somanna . During the tour, India will play test matches against France, Spain and South Africa followed by a three-nation (Great Britain, India and Spain) invitational tournament in Spain.

Gurvinder Singh Chandi returns after missing the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Yuvraj Walmiki who replaced Gurvinder Singh Chandi for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, is dropped as Chandi returns. Experienced Ignace Tirkey is back in team after he was rest, while Chinglensana Singh makes the cut after missing out the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

The three-nation tournament involving Great Britain, India and hosts Spain will be played on the blue artificial turf with yellow kookaburra balls.

India will play a total of eight matches during the three week long France and Spain tour, which are expected to help the team to acclimatise to the European conditions and will be last outing before they play in Olympics at Riverbank Arena, London. Continue reading →

28 Indian Players signed up for Hockey India League on 7 June 2012

28 Indian Players including the top stars from the current national team have signed on to play in the inaugural session of cash rich Hockey India League. Initial 28 contracts were signed between Hockey India and players in Pune on Thursday 7 June 2012.

In the list of 28 players who have signed on to play in the league includes Indian forward Shivendra Singh, Tushar Khandker ,Yuvraj Walmiki and others.

The First contract was signed by Shivendra Singh followed by second Tushar Khandker and third Yuvraj Walmiki. Ms. Elena Norman (CEO, Hockey India) signed on behalf of Hockey India. Continue reading →

Vinaya Returns to Camp, 2nd Phase Camp Starts in New Delhi

The core group of Indian men’s hockey team reach Delhi on Saturday from Bangalore for the second phase of the Olympic qualification preparatory camp. The camp got underway at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, on Sunday, which is also the venue of 1st Olympic Qualifiers for London Olympics 2012. Chief coach Michael Nobbs and exercise physiologist David Ian John  joined the probables for the camp after a short break in Australia for the Christmas and New Year.

Midfielder VS Vinaya, who is an expert on right flank, makes a return with the second phase of the camp. He last played for the country in the European tour in 2009, will aim to cement his place in the team after missing out during the whole important year of 2010, which included World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. During this period he represented Barcelona in the Spanish League for few seasons. “I am happy to be back in the Indian camp. During the time I was out I played a lot of domestic tournaments, but what helped me most was my stint with Barcelona,” he said.  While Yuvraj Walmiki and Rupinder Pal Singh are out of action for 2-3 weeks as they are recovering from injuries.
