Riding High Raghunath’s Hat-trick UP Wizards beat Magicians

Captain VR Raghunath led from the front and slammed a hat-trick to help Uttar Pradesh Wizards to win their 2nd match in the tournament, as they came from 0-2 down to register a 5-3 win over Dabur Mumbai Magicians in a round-robin league match of the second edition of Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium in Mumbai today.

After failing to seize their opportunities in the first two quarters, the Uttar Pradesh Wizards took control of the game after halftime and pumped in as many as four goals to make a stunning comeback in the game.

The match started on a slow pace as both the sides struggled to get their footing initially.

Riding on hat-tricks of Indian International star players, Air India and IOCL scored big wins on 2nd day of MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament 2013 being played at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Egmore, Chennai, while IOB defeated Army XI in final game of the day.

Star forward Prabhjot Singh and ace drag flicker V R Raghunath scored 3 goals each; Deepak Thakur (29″-FG) and Didar Singh (37″-PC) added one each for IOCL to beat Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) 8-1 in Pool A. SS Bundela scored lone goal for CAG in 31st minute on a penalty corner. Sandeep Singh and Sardar Singh are Nominated for Khel Ratna 2013

Former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh and current captain Sardar Singh have been nominated for the most prestigious sports award in India i.e. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh is recommended by his state “Haryana” government while his state-mate Sardar Singh is nominated by Hockey India.

Raghunath Single Handedly Won HIL Bronze for Uttar Pradesh Wizards

Ranchi, 10 February 2013: Four goals, including a golden goal from skipper Raghunath right in the last minute of extra time earned Uttar Pradesh Wizards a 4-3 win over Jaypee Punjab Warriors in an absolute thriller of a third place play-off game of the Hero Hockey India League at Birsa Munda Astroturf Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

Trailing 0-3 at one stage, Wizards came back with Raghunath scoring a hat-trick, all through drag flicks, to force and extra time. Raghunath then scored his fourth from another drag flick to ensure that Wizards got the bronze medal, and earned prize money of Rs 75 lakhs.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors completely dominated the first quarter. They showed a lot of intensity, and aggression, and were rewarded for it with a couple of goals. Gurmail Singh entered the Wizards’ D, and put the ball on Nithin’s leg to earn Warriors their first penalty corner. Spectacular start to Hero Hockey India League; Delhi Waveriders launch campaign with a victory

New Delhi, 14 January 2013: Hosts Delhi Waveriders launched their campaign in the Hero Hockey India League with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyanchand National stadium here on Monday.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke (14th min) and Gurwinder Singh Chandi (22nd) found the net for the winners while Australian Keiran Govers (42nd) scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

New Delhi, 20 December 2012: India started their campaign on a winning note in the 2nd Asian Champions Trophy being played at Doha, Qatar. India defeated China 4-0 in their opening match of the tournament on Thursday.
