Sandeep Singh and Sardar Singh are Nominated for Khel Ratna 2013

Former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh and current captain Sardar Singh have been nominated for the most prestigious sports award in India i.e. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh is recommended by his state “Haryana” government while his state-mate Sardar Singh is nominated by Hockey India.

Hockey India has also recommended Selector and Olympian Syed Ali for the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2013.

Danish Mujtaba (Captain of the Indian Men Hockey Team during the 22nd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, Malaysia in March 2013), VR Raghunath (Current Vice-Captain of Indian Men Hockey Team), forward Tushar Khandekar and Bharat Chetri (former Indian Captain) have been recommended for the Arjuna Award 2013 in the men’s category. Sandeep Singh and Yuvraj Walmiki Recalled for Netherlands Tour of Indian Men’s Hockey Team

New Delhi, 26 April 2013: Indian Men’s Hockey Team for Netherlands tour from 27 April – 9 May 2013 is announced. The 18 member Indian squad will be captained by Sardar Singh and VR Raghunath will be vice captain.

The Indian team will be traveling to Netherlands to play a total seven matches in preparations for the Senior Men team for FIH Men’s Hockey World League Round- 3(Semi-finals) to be played at Rotterdam, Netherlands from 13-23 June 2013.

Spectacular start to Hero Hockey India League; Delhi Waveriders launch campaign with a victory

New Delhi, 14 January 2013: Hosts Delhi Waveriders launched their campaign in the Hero Hockey India League with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyanchand National stadium here on Monday.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke (14th min) and Gurwinder Singh Chandi (22nd) found the net for the winners while Australian Keiran Govers (42nd) scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

Hockey India League names three Indians and three Overseas players as Marquee Players

NEW DELHI, November 29: Hockey India League has named its Brand Ambassadors Sardar Singh (India) and Jamie Dwyer (Australia) as well as the world’s most capped player Teun de Nooijer (the Netherlands), Germany’s double Olympic gold medallist Moritz Fürste and Indians Sandeep Singh and SV Sunil as Marquee Players for the December 16 Hockey India League Auction.

Spain beat India 2-1 in the 2nd test of Santander series

The Spanish team defeated India (2-1) in the second test match at Santander as both teams are in final stage of preparations for the London Games. Sandeep Singh (Penalty corner 28th minute) scored the solitary goal for India, while Spain registered goals through Pau Quemada (34th minute) and Santi Freixa (Penalty corner 69th minute).

After drawing first test (3-3) against World Number 5 side spain, India continued to play a fast and attacking game. And took lead through the penalty corner goal by ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh in 28th minute.

Uncomfortable on the field Spain managed to level the score (1-1) through Pau Quemada’s field  goal which turned the tied. The hosts took possession of the ball and set up the tempo of game after the lemon break. The Skipper of Spain, Santi Freixa converted a penalty in the 69th minute to win the game for his team to avoid second consecutive draw. Continue reading

A dusty way to a new ground.. Hockey Village India @ Garh Himmat Singh, Rajasthan

Garh Himmat Singh, one of the most laid back villages in eastern Rajasthan houses a Hockey Academy where more than 50 boys and girls have been playing the Indian National Game since a year.  Andrea Thumshirn, a first division hockey player from Germany began this academy in July 2010 and aptly called it Hockey Village India.

The children from the village have been learning the game and improving at it each day. Though the conditions of the ground are those which no hockey stick in this world can stand – the dust, sand and stones are painful, the kids don’t mind because they know that their time on a “real” ground will come.
