Former India Women Captain Saba Anjum receives the Padma Shri Award

Bringing another laurel for Indian hockey, the former India Women Captain Saba Anjum today received one of the most prestigious national honours – Padma Shri Award – from Honourable President Shri Pranab Mukherjee at a Civil Investiture Ceremony, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on April 08.

Indian Men Hockey Captain Sardar Singh received his Padma Shri Award last week from Honourable President of India. Both Sardar as well as Saba Anjum were even conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Sardar Singh, the captain of Indian Men’s Hockey Team, received the award from the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi today. Sardar Singh and co along with Indian Women Hockey team were felicitated by Hockey India on Saturday at a grand ceremony “Hockey India Annual Awards” for their achievements in 2014.

A delighted and proud Captain Sardar Singh said, “It is a great honour for me and I would take this opportunity to thank Hockey India for giving me the support which boosted my morale. Also, I must give credit of my success to the coaches, who have guided me and tirelessly worked with me during my journey in hockey. The 28-year-old midfielder Sardar has played a pivotal role for India and his skilful game which has even inspired the new generation of hockey players across the world. Sardar made his debut for the senior team against Pakistan in 2006 and since then he has played more than 200 international matches and has successfully contributed towards Indian hockey. Sandeep Singh and Sardar Singh are Nominated for Khel Ratna 2013

Former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh and current captain Sardar Singh have been nominated for the most prestigious sports award in India i.e. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The ace drag flicker Sandeep Singh is recommended by his state “Haryana” government while his state-mate Sardar Singh is nominated by Hockey India.

Hockey India has also recommended Selector and Olympian Syed Ali for the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2013.

Danish Mujtaba (Captain of the Indian Men Hockey Team during the 22nd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, Malaysia in March 2013), VR Raghunath (Current Vice-Captain of Indian Men Hockey Team), forward Tushar Khandekar and Bharat Chetri (former Indian Captain) have been recommended for the Arjuna Award 2013 in the men’s category.
