After completing 4 of the 5 days of WOMEN’s Hockey Competition in the league stage, only defending champions Netherlands (Pool A) have confirmed a place in the semi-finals, while other three spots are still up for grabs, and will be known only after the conclusion of the pool matches.
Both Great Britain and China (from Pool A) stand a chance of making it to the semi-final. Would it be China or Great Britain, will be known after the later completes their match against the defending champions Dutch, who have 4 wins of 4 matches in the competition till now. The silver medallists from Beijing, China will play must win match against Japan at 13:45 BST, while the hosts Great Britain will be up against Netherlands at 19:00 BST. The Day 4 of the WOMEN’s Hockey Competition at London Olympics will start with some interesting situations, 4 Pool B teams (Argentina, New Zealand, Australia and Germany) are having 6 points from the three matches with two wins and one loss each.
The day will start with the match between the two Southern Hemisphere teams Australia and South Africa from Pool B at 0830 BST. World #7 Hockeyroos, who are locked with three other teams at 6 points, will definitely be upbeat with their two back to back wins against world number three Germany and 2011 Pan American Games Champions USA and would love to continue their winning streak. 2nd match of the day will be played between defending champions Netherlands and Korea. Day 3 Matches of Pool A are expected to be interesting. Australia will start the action of the day against Argentina at 08:30 BST. Hosts Great Britain will take on Pakistan in 2nd match of 2nd session of the day at 16:00 BST, both the teams have one draw and one win from two matches and will be looking for strengthening their chances for semi-finals. In 1st match of evening session injury affected Spain will play South Africa, both of them have 1 point from 2 matches and would like to bring themselves into the race for knock-out stage by winning the match.
In Pool B, World Number 3 Netherlands will play number 7 New Zealand at 10:45 BST. Netherlands has two wins from as many matches when compared to New Zealand’s one win. Though both of them defeated India, Netherlands also defeated Belgium, while New Zealand lost their opening match to Korea. In the first of match Day 3 of the Women’s Hockey Competition, Korea and Japan (Pool A | 830 BST) will fight to earn their first points of the London 2012 Games. Both Korea and Japan, who are placed at 8th and 9th place in FIH World Ranking and finished at 9th and 10th place respectively in Beijing 4 years ago, have lost their first two matches.
2nd match of the day, will be played between upset creators Australia (7th in World) and USA (10th in World) at 10:45 BST. The Hockeyroos stunned world number three Germany (3-1) on the second day, while USA repeated their Pan American Games performance and defeated world champions Argentina (1-0) in their second match to keep themselves in the race for semi-finals.
