Australia and New Zealand will be tough challenge for India: Poonam

After a successful campaign in the Hero Hockey World League Round 2 in New Delhi, forward player Poonam Rani is geared-up to take on a new assignment along with the Women National Hockey Team in the upcoming Hawke’s Bay Cup 2015 in New Zealand scheduled to start on 11th April.

In the new environment and new teams, Poonam Rani and her team-mates will face real challenges against the world’s toughest defence line-ups in the tournament. Along with forward players Vandana Katariya (Women Player of the Year) and Rani Rampal, Poonam Rani are working on out of the box strategies to make in-roads in the opponents’ defence line-up as top-ranked teams such as Australia and New Zealand may get physical during the attacks and compact defence line-ups of China and Korea. Indian Women beat Thailand 3-0, Men looking to continue Winning streak

Facing Thailand in their opening match of the 17th Asian Games today, the Indian Women Hockey Team starts their outing with a 3-0 win to earn full 3 points from the opener at Soenhak Hockey Stadium in Incheon. Yesterday, their men counter part defeated Sri Lanka 8-0 to start campaign on winning note.

Converting one penalty corner each successfully, it was Poonam Rani and Vice-Captain Deepika and a field goal from Vandana Katariya, ensured a 3-0 victory against Thailand and registering the team’s first win in the tournament.

Opening the first quarter, India had to wait until the 14th minute when Poonam Rani scored on set-piece in a penalty corner opportunity and opening the account for India. In the second quarter, the Thai defence stood strong and did not let India score any goal. Continue reading →

Glasgow 2014 (w): India take fifth place with 2-1 win over Scotland

Scotland, 1 August 2014: India defeated the host nation Scotland by 2-1 to finish at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in women’s competition, while Malaysia and Wales won the 7th and 9th placing match.

Malaysia defeated Canada 3-0 on shoot-out after having scores tied at 2-2 at the time full-time hooter, while Wales defeated Trinidad and Tobago by 4-0 to avoid wooden spoon.

Playing for the 5th position, the Indian eves yet again proved they are a promising team who one should look out for in the near future. While their first half was a showcase of great defense along with counter attacking, it was only in the second half that the Indian forwards finally scored and won the match leaving dents in the opponent’s semi circle. Congratulations Poonam and Chanchan on 100 International Caps Milestone

Poonam Rani and Chanchan Devi, the members of the Indian Women Hockey Team have reached the milestone of 100 international caps.

In this journey of 100 international matches, both of them have done the country proud with their contribution since their debut at international stage with many learnings as well as experiences along with proud moments.

Poonam Rani completed her 100th international match during their European Tour against Ireland last week, Chanchan Devi completed the milestone as she entered the pitch at Glasgow National Hockey Centre in India’s first match of the FIH Champions Challenge 1 against Korea yesterday, which India lost 2-4. Indian Jr Women Team departs for Ergo Hockey Junior World Cup 2013

15 July 2013: Indian Junior Women Hockey Team today departed for Germany to participate in the Ergo Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 (Women) which will be played at the Warsteiner Hockey Park in Mönchengladbach, Germany from 27th July to 4th August 2013.

India, who are placed in Pool-C with New Zealand, Australia and Russia, will open their campaign against Australia on 27 July at 6:00PM IST, followed by their next pool match against New Zealand on 28 July at 6:30 PM IST. India to Face China in their 1st Final of Jr Women’s Asia Cup

Indian girls defeated Japan 2-1 through golden goal by the vice-captain of the team Poonam Rani to reach the final of the 6th Junior Asia Cup.  In their first ever final of Junior Women’s Asia Cup, India will meet China, who defeated Korea 3-2 in other semi-final.

Indian vice-captain Poonam Rani, who came into tournament with 72 international caps, scored the golden goal in 9th minute of extra time to take India into final who also secured an entry in FIH Junior Women’s World Cup 2013.

Japan, the toppers of Pool B, took lead through Yuri Nagai’s field goal in 30th Minute of the game and went into lemon break with one goal advantages. India came out strongly in second period of the game and pressed hard to create some good moves around Japan’s D. Which helped India to find equalizer in 49th through a penalty corner goal by Vandana Katariya, who has more than 50 international appearances for India. Continue reading →
