Malaysia beat Black Sticks to Face Canada in Semis at CC1 Kuantan

The hosts Malaysia defeated the Black Sticks 3-2 in thrilling shoot-out after the Kiwis made strong come back to make it 4-4 at full-time from 1-4 at half time, while Ireland overcame France 3-0 in another shoot-out at the Pahang Champions Challenge 1 in Kuantan, Malaysia.

In the other quarter-finals Canada and Korea defeated Poland and Japan respectively with the scores of 3-2 and 5-1 to complete the semi-final line-up. Black Sticks Won all 3 Pool Matches at Kuantan CC1

The Black Sticks Men have defeated Poland 8-3 to progress unbeaten into the quarter finals at the Pahang Champions Challenge 1 being played at Kuantan, Malaysia as Pool A toppers, while Korea topped Pool B.

The Black Sticks now face a quarter final clash against hosts Malaysia, who finished last in Pool B, at 14:45 local time (18:45 NZ Time) on Thursday. The other quarter final matches are Ireland vs France, Korea vs Japan and Canada vs Poland on the same day.

With previous wins over Ireland (2-1) and Japan (6-1), the result over Poland saw the Kiwis finish atop Pool A with three wins from three games. Continue reading →

Black Sticks Beat Japan 6-1 at Kuantan CC1

The Black Sticks Men defeated Japan with a score line of 6-1, Poland defeated Ireland 2-1, Canada beat France 3-2, while Korea overcame hosts Malaysia 3-1 at Pahang Champions Challenge 1 in Kuantan, Malaysia.

Four goals in the first half (Steve Edwards, Kane Russell, Alex Shaw and Simon Child) were enough to sink Japan’s hopes with 35 minutes still to play. Black Sticks start Challenge on Winning Note

The Black Sticks Men have opened their tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ireland in the opening match of the Pahang Hockey Champions Challenge in Kuantan, Malaysia.

Pahand Hockey Champions Challenge I (Men's): KuantanIn the other matches on opening day of the tournament, Japan and France their respective matches against Poland and hosts Malaysia respectively by 3-2 each, while Korea were held by Canada for a 3-3 draw.

Due to soaring temperatures around 34 degrees Celsius, the game was split into four 17.5 minute quarters for player welfare.

Steve Edwards opened the scoring for New Zealand in the 11th minute before the Irish responded through Alan Sothern to lock the game up 1-1 at halftime. Continue reading →

England Men book place in the EuroHockey Semi-Finals

England are through to the semi-finals of the TriFinance EuroHockey Championships 2013. England will now face hosts Belgium while Netherlands will be up against Germany in the Semi Finals to be played on 23rd August in Antwerp. Before a nail-biting 2-2 draw against Ireland, England had defeated Poland 5-2 in their opening pool game and lost to Netherlands (1-2) in the second game.

Tom Carson was England’s hero with two goals for his side against Ireland, but it was a real team effort to keep a determined Ireland from taking a victory.

Ireland started the brighter side, creating an early chance, but it was England who got the first goal with just seven minutes on the clock. After some good build up play and a great run across the circle by David Condon he fired his shot towards goal, which Reading’s Tom Carson deftly deflected in the air past David Harte in Ireland’s goal. In the 19th minute England were back on the score sheet. This time a pass across the circle from Barry Middleton found Carson, who again was in a perfect spot and reacted quickly to slot the ball home to make it 2-0 at half-time. Continue reading →

Jackson will miss EuroHockey Championships, Lewers return to Action

Ahead of the TriFinance EuroHockey Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, England Head Coach Bobby Crutchley has named his squad of 18 athletes who will compete from 18-25 August.
