#HWL2015: India eves defeated by Australia, to face Netherlands in Quarter-Finals

  • Reigning World, Olympic & HWL champions the Netherlands play India while New Zealand to face-off against Japan

Following the completion of the pool phase at the women’s FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp, the line-up for the cross-over quarter-final matches has been confirmed. The top three finishers in the event will not only seal a place at the end of year Hockey World League Final in Argentina but also qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick against Italy as the Netherlands finished top of Pool A, with Oranje now facing a quarter-final match-up against India, Pool B’s fourth placed team. As the much awaited FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 is all set to commence from tomorrow, 20 June 2015 in Antwerp, Belgium, all the 10-participating teams are entirely geared-up to exhibit their finest skills and put-up their best show on the field during the tournament to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

On the inaugural day of the tournament, FIH Rank #13 India will lock horns with the FIH Rank #12 Belgium in the Pool B match. Before the tournament, India lost to Italy and Japan by 1-2 and 0-2 respectively in practice matches.

In the recent times, India Women team faced Belgium twice during the 2014 FIH Champions Challenge 1 in Glasgow, where they lost both the matches against the European team. India beat Japan by 4-0 to stay unbeaten in 4 match #INDvJAP series at Bhubaneswar

The hosts India continued to improve throughout the series and finished the campaign with yet another win over visitors Japan in Bhubaneswar. After being held for 1-1 draw in first match, India won rest of the three matches to win the series by 3-0. As India won the 2nd match by 2-0 and 3rd by 2-1, they scored 9 goals in 4 matches and conceded only 2 in the 4 match series was live telecast by DD Sports.

With the series already in their name, India played to add another win to their name while Japan looked at ending the series with one win in their name. India beat Japan by 2-1 in 3rd Match of 4 Test Series at Bhubaneswar

After leading the four-match Test Series by 1-0, India edged past Japan by 2-1 in the third match and won the series by 2-0. Penalty corner specialist VR Raghunath converted another corner with an ease whereas Akashdeep Singh displayed a brilliant stick-work when he scored the second goal for his team. After a tough fight Japan’s Hirotaka Wakari scored the lone goal for his team.

After settling for a 1-1 draw against Japan in the first match of the Indo-Japan series, India confidently defeated Japan 2-0 in the second match of the series at Bhubaneswar today.
