London 2012 Hockey – WOMEN-Day 1: Results and Review

Day 1 of the Women’s Hockey Games at Riverbank Arena in London concluded with Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, China, Netherlands and New Zealand earning 3 points each after winning the matches.

Germany vs USA 2-1 (2-0 half-time)

London 2012 Hockey ResultsWorld #3 Germany scraped past (2-1) World #10 USA to earn their crucial 3 points. Germany will be relieved after winning it 2-1 from 2-0 lead at half time. It was Yvonne FRANK and the defending unit of Germans who kept their nerves to win the game, when Americans pressurized for an equalizer in the last minutes.

Captain Fanny RINNE’s flick in the top corner in the 8th Minute and close range rocketing reverse hit in the roof of net by Lisa HAHN on Janne MULLER-WIELAND’s pass in 21st Minute saw Germany going for the lemon break with a 2-0 lead. Putting up a keen  fight, the USA women forced penalty corners in the second half but could convert only one when Captain and Injector Lauren CRANDALL guided the Claire LAUBACH’s flick home.

Great Britain vs Japan 4-0 (4-0 half-time)

Backed by home advantage and support of the 12th man-the Supporters in Stands, hosts Great Britain scored a comfortable win (4-0) over Japanese Women, who are at 9th place in FIH World Rankings.

London Olympic Hockey Competitions WOMEN – Day 1: “Opening – Hockeyroos will take on Black Sticks”

The curtain raises at the Riverbank arena to open the Hockey competition of the 2012 London Olympics at 8:30 (BST) on 29th July with New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team taking on Australia in the opening game (Pool B). The 3 times Olympics Gold medalists Hockeyroos (Australian Women’s Hockey Team) will play Trans-Tasmanian arch-rivals Black Sticks as hockey fans from around the world support their country and the game, the Men’s competition will kick-start on Monday 30th July, as the Korean Men lock horns with the Black Sticks (New Zealand).

London 2012 Hockey PreviewsIn the other matches of the day current World #1 in the FIH World Rankings and Beijing Gold Medalists – Netherlands will play Belgium (Pool A) who are at 16th place in the World Rankings and are playing their first Olympics, this match will be followed by Gold Medalists of Asian Games 2010 China’s battle against Korea (Silver Medalists of Asian Games 2010) in Pool A. India Vs Japan and Korea vs China in the Semis of Jr Asia Cup (Women’s)

After the results of Day 7 (last day of pool stage matches), the semi-finalists of 6th 6th Junior Women’s Asia Cup are now known. Pool A leaders China will Korea placed 2nd in Pool B standings while Japan (Pool B Standings Toppers) will take on India (2nd in Pool A).

Asian Hockey Federation LogoEarlier on the last day of pool stage, India and Malaysia needed a win to reach semi finals, but India had to fight it out against a bold effort of Malaysia to win the match 2-1 from 0-1 deficit. It is Malaysia’s best outing against India in the competition. Apart from the win against Malay Girls India lost to China 2-5 and defeated Sri Lanka (16-0) and  Singapore (9-0) on the way to semi finals, while China won all of their pool games against Sri Lanka (21-0), Malaysia (3-0), India (5-2) and Singapore (6-0).

In Pool A, Japan and Korea are separated only by Goal Difference, as they drew their match against each other and defeated Thailand, Kazakhstan and Pakistan in the pool stage matches. Japan defeated Pakistan (17-0), Kazakhstan (24-0) and Thailand (6-0) and Korea won against them 19-0, 20-0 and 8-0 respectively.
