New Delhi, 29th January 2013: Delhi Waveriders defeated Jaypee Punjab Warriors 3-0 at the MDC National Stadium on Tuesday to continue their dream run in the Hero Hockey India League.

Young Indian forward  Akashdeep Singh opened the scoring for the hosts and Black Sticks Andrew Hayward and Simon Child added one each to make it 3-0 against Warriors. With the win Delhi Waveriders have maintained theie top position points table and now have 32 points from seven games.
“Delhi Waveriders are definitely playing well, and are favourites to win the title,” Warriors’ skipper Jamie Dwyer said after the match.

There was only one goal scored in the first two quarters, but Waveriders were clearly the better side at half-time. They created more chances; they had higher number of circle penetration (10 to Warriors’ 5) and also dominated the ball possession (58%). However, AK Bansal’s team had only one goal to show for it, a beautiful strike by Akashdeep Singh in the 13th minute. After getting the ball near Warriors’ D, Akashdeep dribbled past a couple of defenders, took the ball to the right of the goalpost, and then smashed an unstoppable reverse-hit to put Waveriders on the scoreboard. Jaypee Punjab Warriors will need better co-ordination among star studded forward line including Jamie Dwyer, Shivendra Singh, S V Sunil, etc.

Warriors fought well against Delhi Waveriders on Monday, but their forward-line failed to create enough goal-scoring opportunities, and that is something that the team think tank would have worked on, on Tuesday, their only rest day for the first four days of the tournament. The likes of SV Sunil, Shivendra Singh would have to play a more attacking hockey, if the Warriors want to be a lot more dangerous in the coming games.

Warriors skipper Jamie Dwyer admitted after Monday’s game that the team needs to do better. “We didn’t start the game well.  I think, as a team, we still need to combine a bit better. Hopefully, we would start doing that in the next few games,” the Aussie said on Monday night. Continue reading →
