Netherlands, Korea and Australia (Top 3 in FINTRO #HWL2015) on #RoadtoRio

The Netherlands women won the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 by defeating the Asian Champions Korea by 2-1 in the final at Dragons Hockey Club in Antwerp. In third place match, Australia defeated their trans-Tasmanian rivals New Zealand by 4-2 to qualify for Rio Olympics 2016.

India‘s Goalkeeper Savita Punia and Forward Rani Rampal played crucial roles in their spirited comeback against Italy in 5th-8th classification match at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Rani Rampal helped India in winning against Italy

Italy scored early in the match to take lead in 9th minute, later Rani Rampal scored equalizer in early second half to force the shoot-out. In the shoot-out, Indian Goalkeeper Savita Punia saved first sudden death attempt while Rani scored her both the attempt to take India to 5th place play-off, where India will face the winner of the match between Belgium and Japan. With an aim at 5th place and keep chances alive for RIO Olympics, India Women Hockey Team will take on Italy in the 5th/8th position classification match at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp, Belgium.

India met Italy last year during the Italy Test Series 2014 where India lost the series to the host team by a narrow margin of 1-0. Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands and Korea sealed their places in the final four on a baking hot, drama-filled women’s quarter-final day at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp.

They overcame the respective challenges of Italy by 2-0, Japan by 5-1, India by 7-0 and host nation Belgium by 3-0 in shoot-out after 2-2 draw in full-time. The four winners of quarter-final stage has reached semi-finals (to be played on Thursday, 2nd July) dand booked their tickets to the prestigious end of year Hockey World League Finals that will be played in Argentina. They will be joined in that event by Great Britain, China, Germany and Argentina, who all achieved qualification by securing top four finishes at the recent Hockey World League Semi-Final event in Valencia. India Men hockey team is geared-up for their Quarter-Final match against Malaysia in the ongoing FINTRO World Hockey League Semi-Final 2015. Quarter-finals are scheduled to be held on 01 July 2015 when Australia, Great Britain and Belgium face challenges from Ireland, Pakistan and France respectively in knock-out stage in Antwerp, Belgium (Full Schedule Here).

Following the completion of the pool phase at the women’s FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp, the line-up for the cross-over quarter-final matches has been confirmed. The top three finishers in the event will not only seal a place at the end of year Hockey World League Final in Argentina but also qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick against Italy as the Netherlands finished top of Pool A, with Oranje now facing a quarter-final match-up against India, Pool B’s fourth placed team.
