13 June 2013: Defending Champions Punjab defeated Odisha 2-1 to defend their Junior National Hockey Champions title, while Madhya Pradesh finished 3rd by defeating Maharashtra in the 3rd Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2013 which concluded today at Motil Lal Nehru Sports Complex, Rai in Sonepat (Haryana).
Punjab scored their opening goal through their skipper Gaganpreet Singh who converted the penalty corner in the 10th minute while Odisha leveled the score in the 24th minute with the field goal scored by Joseph Toppo.
In the second half, both the teams fought hard but finally Punjab’s Skipper Gaganpreet Singh managed to convert a penalty stroke in the 63rd minute to win the final which was graced by the Chief Minister of Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda as chief guest. Continue reading →

Parvinder Singh and Gaganpreet Singh scored twice for defending Champions Punjab to register a 6-2 win over Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in the first semi-final, while Odisha defeated The Hockey Maharashtra 2-1 in second semi-final played today. 11 June 2013: Defending champions Punjab, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, The Hockey Maharashtra and Odisha entered the semi-finals of the 3rd Hockey India Junior Men National Championship being played at Moti Lal Nehru Sports Complex, Rai in Sonepat (Haryana).
In the semi-finals to be played on Wednesday in afternoon, Punjab will take on Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy while Odisha will clash with The Hockey Maharashtra.
Defending champion Punjab defeated Sports Authority of India 3-1 in the first quarter-final match.
Punjab scored their opening goal through Simranjeet Singh in the 10th minute while an own goal in the 34th minute helped Sports Authority of India to level the score. 10 June, 2013: Air India defeated defending Champions Punjab by 6-2 to win the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2013 which concluded today at the Major Dhyan Chand Polygrass Hockey Stadium in Pimpri, Pune on Monday.

Air India got off the mark quickly and rushed ahead with 2 quick goals from Sameer Dad (2nd minute) and Affan Yousuf (3rd minute). Sameer finished after receiving the ball from Joga Singh, while Affan (eventually adjudged Man of the Championship) found the target with reverse flick. Though Punjab tried to come out and put pressure on Air India, but some brilliant defending by Ajmer Singh and tight marking of Deepak Thakur by Air India skipper Prabodh Tirkey did not give any chance to Punjab to score in 1st half. 10 June 2013: The Hockey Maharashtra, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh completed the quarter-finals line-up of the 3rd Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2013 being played at Moti Lal Nehru Sports Complex, Rai in Sonepat (Haryana).
The hosts Haryana, along with Punjab, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy and Sports Authority of India are the other teams who have already qualified for the quarter-finals.
In Pool B, Odisha defeated Tamil Nadu 7-1 in their concluding league match. 9 June 2013: Defending champions Punjab will take on last years Runners-Up Air India in the final of 2013 Senior Men Hockey Nationals, which will be live telecasted on DD Sports. Last edition’s bronze medalists Karnataka will play Haryana in 3rd place play off match, which was the case last year also.

Punjab registered comprehensive 5-2 win over Karnataka in 1st semi final to enter the final while Air India defeated Haryana 7-3 in second semi-final.
Leading 3-2 at the half time, Punjab scored through Deepak Thakur (10, 22 min), Gurjinder Singh (17 min0, Sarvanjit Singh (45 min) and Vikramjit Singh (58 min) while M K Muddappa (7 min) and Nikkin Thimmaiah (29 min) scored for Karnataka.
Punjab looked the better drilled outfit with a lot of character and composure while Karnataka committed far too many errors which put them on the defensive for the second half of the game. Continue reading →
