Lee names England Women’s squad for Hockey World Cup

Thursday 8 May 2014:  With just 23 days to go England Women’s Head Coach Jason Lee has named his squad of 18 athletes to travel out to The Hague in the Netherlands for the Rabobank Hockey World Cup, taking place from 31 May-15 June 2014.

The squad remains largely unchanged from that which won a silver and bronze medal during 2013 at the European Championships and World League Final respectively. However Lee has named two relative newcomers in his 18; Beeston’s Ellie Watton and Buckingham’s Zoe Shipperley.

All of England’s matches will be shown live on Sky; the first game will be against the USA at 12:00 (UK time) on Sunday 1 June.

With three World Cups under her belt and a bronze medal from 2010 [Rosario, Argentina] England Captain Kate Richardson-Walsh will be hoping her side can improve on third this time around.

England are in Pool B with Argentina, China, Germany, South Africa and the USA. Of the six teams in the pool, England (3) is the second-highest ranked in the FIH World Rankings after Argentina (2), while the rest of the sides are sixth or lower. Continue reading →

Living Legends of 1975 World Cup Winning Squad to be Felicitated

7 May 2014: The players who won only World Cup title for India will be felicitated on 14th May 2014, when the Indian team for Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 is to be announced.

India won its only World Cup title in the year 1975 at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia (watch full final match between India and Pakistan here)

Hockey India has invited all 13 Living members of the 1975 World Cup winning team in the capital where they will be presented a token one-time payment of Rs. 1,75,000 each for their contribution towards ensuring that they brought home the pride to every Indian of being the World Champions that year. Hockeyroos World Cup Squad is Announced

30 April 2014 (Perth, Australia): The Hockeyroos’ squad for next month’s women’s Rabobank Hockey World Cup has been announced by Hockey Australia. The 18 athlete squad named by National Coach Adam Commens and the selection panel contains just seven of the squad that finished fifth at the 2010 World Cup and nine of those that represented Australia at the 2012 Olympic Games.

While for many of the squad the World Cup will be the biggest tournament of their young careers so far, the Hockeyroos go into the competition on the back of impressive progress over the past 12 months. Gold medal victories at the Oceania Cup and World League Semi Final tournaments, and a silver medal finish at the World League Finals in Argentina last November have helped the Australian women to rise to fourth in the world rankings. Kookaburras’ Squad Announced: 4th World Cup for Dwyer and De Young

28 April 2014 (Perth, Australia) – The Kookaburras’ squad for next month’s men’s Rabobank Hockey World Cup has been announced by Hockey Australia. National Coach Ric Charlesworth and the selection panel have named what they believe to be the best balanced 18 athlete squad as Australia looks to successfully defend the gold medal won at the 2010 World Cup in Delhi.

Ten of that world title-winning side are selected for the 2014 campaign while just three of the squad have made fewer than 50 appearances for Australia.

Announcing the squad, Charlesworth said of the selection process: “It’s as hard as it’s ever been for me. 28 [fit athletes] doesn’t go into 18. It’s been a difficult process and there are two or three very unlucky people; some we just couldn’t find a place for.”

India Lost to Netherlands in Last Match of Europe Tour

Much improved Indian Senior Men Hockey Team ended up on losing side in their last game of the Europe Tour against Netherlands at the Hague, in The Netherlands today.

After winning their first game of the tour against Leiden Hockey Club (Dutch National Hockey Club) 7-0, and drawing 3-3 in the second match against HGC Hockey Club (Dutch National Club), Indian team had lost to Belgium (1-2) and Netherlands (2-4) national teams. This tour is in preparations for the FIH Men’s World Cup 2014, scheduled to be held at The Hague, Netherlands from 31 May -15 June 2014.

In their last match of the tour, India displayed some good hockey, but were unlucky to not to win the game against London Olympics Silver Medalists the Netherlands. Continue reading →
