This weekend, Unibet EuroHockey Championships concluded at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. Hosts England won the title in women’s category, and the Netherlands outclassed Germany to win men’s competition.

Indian Women Hockey Team Celebrate during FIH Hockey World League Round 2 in New Delhi

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed today that India women and Spain have qualified for the hockey event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

India qualified after England defeated Spain in the semi-finals of the Unibet EuroHockey Championships in London, which ensured that the only teams who can now win the event have already qualified for Rio through the Hockey World League Semi-Finals – Netherlands and England (as Great Britain). Belgium Stuns Defending Champions Germany at Jr Hockey World Cup

New Delhi, 6 December 2013: Belgium opened their Hero Hockey Junior World Cup campaign on a high, when they defeated the defending champions Germany.

First half, Germany had upper hand despite a 1-0 lead for 2012 European Junior champions, Belgium at the time of lemon break.

Belgian Goalkeeper Arnaud Flamand made three key saves in the opening frame after a flurry of German attacks, starting with a near-side save on Jonas Gomoll’s deflectioin on a fast from Niklas Bruns. Spain become 9th team to qualify for Men’s Hockey World Cup 2014

With Germany being crowned champions of EuroHockey 2013, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that Spain men have become 9th team to get a place at the 2014 Rabobank Hockey World Cup in the Hague from 31st May to 15th June.

Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, the Hague (Netherlands)  from 31st May to 15th June 2014Next in line of reserves for World Cup qualifications are Malaysia and India. Though both Malaysia and India also have a chance to qualify for the quadrennial event by winning Asia Cup title. However, the two Asian teams will know their status after the completion Asia Cup and Oceania Cup respectively. The Asia Cup 2013 being played in Ipoh, while Oceania Cup 2013 will be played Taranaki, New Zealand, from 30 October to 3 November.

EuroHockey Gold for Germany, Netherlands beat England to take Bronze

Germany defeated hosts Belgium 3-1 in the final of 2013 TriFinance EuroHockey Champsionship to defend their Euro title successfully, while Netherlands clinched bronze medal with the win over England.

England’s men have come away from the EuroHockey Championships with fourth place after losing 3-2 against the Netherlands in their bronze medal match. England went into the break with a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Iain Lewers and Richard Smith, but they couldn’t hang on to their advantage in the second half as the Dutch scored twice in three minutes to turn the game around and claim the victory and the bronze medal. EuroHockey Gold for Germany, beat England through Shoot-out

On the final day of the TriFinance EuroHockey Championships, Germany won the title of European Champions title by defeating England and the Netherlands defeated hosts Belgium to take bronze medal. In the 5th-8th place play-off pool, Spain and Scotland defeated Belarus and Ireland respectively to stay in 2015 edition, while two latter teams will miss out the next edition of EuroHockey Championship.

The 2013 EuroHockey Final between Germany and England was one that will go down in history. The first half saw seven goals in exhilarating end to end hockey. As the sides went in at half-time England trailed by one goal, but they found the equaliser with just four minutes to go. With four goals apiece at the end of full-time it went to a penalty shoot-out to decide the champions. After their shoot-out victory against the Netherlands on Thursday night there were high hopes for England, but Germany had other ideas and after scoring two from four and England failing to convert any of their chances the game was lost. It was a fantastic performance from England however and ranks as their best finish in a European Championship since 1991. Continue reading →
