Ireland’s two national Hockey Teams will compete in Europe’s top competition, TriFinance EuroHockey Championships, kicking off in Belgium this Saturday, August 17th , going head to head with some of the world’s best hockey nations.
In this winner takes all competition the Gold medallists will secure a spot in the 2014 World Cup while the remainder of nations will be pursuing important world ranking points.
Ireland’s Electric Ireland women (ranked 15) kick off proceedings this Saturday against the World Number 1’s The Netherlands in Pool A before facing Belarus (21) and Belgium (13) while Pool B is comprised of England (4); Germany (5); Spain (14) and Scotland (19). Continue reading →
Electric Ireland Irish Women’s Coach Darren Smith has today named his squad for this summer’s TriFinance EuroHockey Championships 2013 from August 17th – 25th in Belgium.
The Irish coach has selected his panel following review of the Electric Ireland Irish Senior Squad recent extensive International series vs. Canada, Wales & Scotland in which 27 players were involved. The Electric Ireland Senior Women’s Hockey team and Canada played out an eight goal thriller in UCD this evening to round off the series in the 3rd game following a win apiece for both sides on Saturday & Sunday respectively.
A quiet start to the game saw neither side really dominate the game until the game finally exploded into life as the ball found its way to Anna O’Flanagan who dinked the ball over the onrushing Williams in the Canadian goal to give Ireland a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Continue reading →
The Electric Ireland Senior Women’s team bounced back from yesterday’s disappointment to emerge 2-1 victors over Canada in wet and windy UCD today.
Darren Smith’s team were tougher in their fifty-fifty battles and breached the Canadian press much more so than in their first test.
Ireland made the better start and won their first penalty corner in the fourth minute when a pass from Watkins found O’Flanagan in the circle, popping the ball onto a Canadian foot. Continue reading →
The Electric Ireland Irish Women’s team were beaten 3-2 by Canada at a wet & windy UCD today as Irish International Nikki Symmons earned her 200th cap for the Green Army. It is a phenomenal achievement for the Loreto Hockey Club player who was presented to the crowd at the National Hockey Stadium before taking the field to become the first Irish Hockey International to reach 200 caps for their country. Today also saw a 1st cap for Ireland’s Emily Beatty and a 50th Cap for Nicci Daly.
Ireland’s performance on the pitch however did not match the occasion and a sluggish start to the game saw Emma Gray in the Ireland goal called into action early as Canada created the best of the early chances before taking a deserved 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Scotland 4 (Kidd 20’, Clement 27’ Bell 50’, Cram 54’) beat Ireland 3 (Atcheler 15’, Jacob 43’, Atcheler 56’)
The Electric Ireland Irish Senior Women squad were beaten 4-3 by Scotland today in the 2nd and final game of a two test series in Edinburgh. The sides played out a 2-2 draw yesterday and today’s encounter was a similarly close fought affair with a better overall quality of play. Continue reading →
