Egypt beat Canada to Avoid Wooden Spoon at Jr World Cup

New Delhi, 14 December 2013: Canada and Egypt, the two lowest ranked teams entering the competition could not pull upset, though they gave some tough fights during the tournaments and ended up playing each other for avoiding the wooden of the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

Play started slowly in the midday heat, then Canada took a slight edge on the proceedings; but at the end of game Egypt were the worthy winners with score board reading 3-0 in favor of them.

Egypt Coach, Ali Alielshorbagy will take the tournament learning back home to work on game and come back as a better team in future, and said, “Post the disappointing performance by the team in this tournament we did not want to finish at the bottom of the table hence winning today’s match was essential. While we did not enter the tournament for the 15th position but we will take this as learning and work on our game and come back as a better team. The boys played well today and I am happy with the efforts that the team put in. Also the Canada team did not play up to their capabilities and they did not play their normal game. England and Spain to Fight for 13th Place at Jr World Cup

England defeated Egypt 6-1, while Spain edged past Canada 3-2 to set-up themselves for 13th place play-off at the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

In the first match of the 13th-16th placing round, Egypt showed up to play for the opening half, stunned England to take lead in 10th minute and held it on till half time.

As for Egypt, who entered the 16-team tournament seeded last, Ramy Mohamed served the stinger that was the lone first-half goal. Egypt’s captain Ahmed Mohsen served up most of the trouble for the English back line despite some valiant tackles from England’s leader Andrew Bull. Continue reading →

Germany and Belgium in QFs from Pool A at Jr World Cup

New Delhi, 10 December 2013: Germany outclassed Egypt by 6-0 and Belgium came from behind to hold Pakistan for 2-2 draw to book themselves a place in quarter-finals of Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

Belgium and Germany, 1st and 2nd team in Pool A will face France and Australia from Pool B in the quarter-finals to be played on 12 December at 17:45 and 13:15 respectively (Full Schedule here). 

With final standings still very much in the air before this last game in the pool between Belgium and Pakistan, pace of play was immediately intense. Pakistan seemed in a better frame of mind than in their initial matches and pushed Belgium back on their heels in the initial fifteen minutes of the match. They could however not really threaten Arnaud Flamand in the Belgian goal and play became balanced, with teams neutralizing each other in midfield. Continue reading →
