Pune Hockey Nationals 2013 Day 10: Defending Champions Punjab, Manipur and Jharkhand in Quarters

6 June 2013: Defending champions Punjab along with Manipur and Jharkhand has entered the Quarter-Finals of the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2013 being played in Pune. Chandigarh, Railways, Haryana and Air India are the other teams who have already qualified for the Quarter-finals.

Riding on form of former Indian captain Deepak Thakur, who scored 5 goals, Punjab defeated Delhi 9-2 in their last league match of Pool A to emerge pool toppers.

In addition to 5 goals of Deepak for unbeatable Punjab, Vikramjit Singh scored thrice while Davinder Pal Singh found the target once. Pawan Singh Chauhan and Avtar Singh Mann scored a goal each for Delhi to reduce the margin to 9-2.

In Pool C, Karnataka registered their third consecutive win, as they defeated Bihar 8-1. Karnataka scored through S K Uthappa (11 min), Nikkin Thimmaiah (22 min), S K Chingappa (29, 31 min), M K Muddappa (39 min), Vickram Kant (43 min), B S Bidappa (51 min) and M G Poonacha (52 min) while Bihar’s only reply came from Satnam Singh (56 min). Day 8 of Pune Hockey Nationals 2013: Delhi, Punjab, Karnataka & Manipur Wins their Matches

4 June 2013: Delhi defeated Gujarat 11-1 in their Pool A league match on the 8th day of Pune Hockey Nationals 2013. Defending Champions Punjab, Karnataka and Manipur also won their respective matches of the day in the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2013 being played in Pune.

The goal scorers for Delhi were Own Goal (3min), Mohit 5, 14, 16 (min), Parveen Kumar (20min), Parshant (26min), Kabir Sharma (27min), Kuldeep (28min), Pradeep Kumar (45min), Anil Kumar (55min) and Rajbir Yadav (58min) while Rohit Thakur (35min) scored the only goal for Gujarat.

In the other match of Pool A, defending champions Punjab registered their second win beating Association of Indian Universities 8-4. Punjab scored through Deepak Thakur (3, 28, 31, 60, 63 min), Vikramjit Singh (24, 49 min) and Ravi Pal (33 min) while Ramandeep Singh (16 min), Razin Kandulana (37, 45 min) and Hardeep Singh 66 min) scored for Association of Indian Universities. A place in the summit clash of the Bridgestone World Series Hockey (WSH) is what the top four teams (Chandigarh Comets (1st), Sher-e-Punjab (2nd), Karnataka Lions (3rd) and Pune Strykers (4th)) from the league stage looking for when they lock horns in the semi-finals on Sunday (1st April, 2012) in Bangalore and Mumbai at 7:00PM and 9:00PM (IST).

Lions will be taking on Shers in Bangalore, formers will be looking to repeat their performance in the league stage when they defeated Shers (2-1) at home, but will be wary of Shers as they will be in full strength and looking forward to silent the den of Lions.

The hosts will depend heavily on experience of captain Arjun Halappa, speed of Sansarpur (Macca of Hockey/Village of Olympians) lad Ravi Pal Singh, young guns like Arjun Antil, Jarnail Singh, etc. and drag-flicks of their top goal scorer Len Aiyappa to deliver the goods upfront. But, veteran Pakistan defender Zeeshan Ashraf will have to work hard and lead from front to defend Lions’ den from the attack led by Shers trio of Deepak Thakur, skipper Prabhjot Singh and Gagan Ajit Singh supported by young Mandeep Antil, Pakistani import Tareeq Azeez, Aussie Mathew Hotchkis. The Shers upfront will be supplied ammunition by Coorg lad VS Vinaya, experienced Inderjit Chadda and co. from the mid-field. Punjab’s citadel will be guarded by Olympian Harpal Singh, who is not only tough to beat for any attacker but also leads his young counterpart from front on field.

The other Semi Final will see the slow starters in tournament Chandigarh Comets (finally ended at the top of table) and unpredictable Pune Stykers at MHA Mahindra Hockey Stadium, Mumbai. Comets who won both home and away matches against Strykers (their opponent in Semi) will hold the edge in knock out match. It will be tough time for Pune defenders in negotiating with the trio of Canadian International Sukhwinder Singh (Gabbar), fomer Captain of Pakistan Rehan Butt and Indian International Bharat Chhikara. Also, they will be have to guard their home against the firing from young drag flick specialist Gurjinder Singh, who will be looking to book himself the Golden-stick of World Series Hockey.

Core group of Olympic probables announced, Halappa and Rajpal are not Considered

Having booked their ticket to London Olympic Games after defeating France by 8-1 in the final of Hero FIH Road to London, (Olympic Qualifier at Delhi), Hockey India has announced a series of Coaching Camps for the Men Probables at SAI Centre Bangalore from 05 March 2012. Indian men’s team will be playing a number of tournaments before kicking off their campgain at the Olympic Games at London from 27 July – 12 August 2012. India has received invitations for two 4 Nations Tournaments at Lahore, Pakistan and Santandar, Spain besides the Olympic Test Events at London and Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at Ipoh, Malaysia.

Hockey India Selectors Col. Balbir Singh, B.P. Govinda and Syed Ali alongwith the Government Observers Harbinder Singh and Dilip Tirkey besides Chief Coach Michael Nobbs held a Selection Meeting to decide on the Core Group of Probables for future camps. They unanimously selected the 48 probables who would be in consideration for the team that would play in the Olympic Games.

The big names like former captains and seasoned players, Arjun Halappa and Rajpal Singh, are missing from the list of probables. Earlier Rajpal Singh was not selected for on the basis of fitness while Arjun Halappa considered good enough for standbys for Olympic Qualifiers Squad. The omission of both the players from scheme of things has came as big shock for hockey fraternity in the country. But this is usual in Indian hockey, players have been left out without any major/minor issue with their onfield performance including Prabhjot Singh, Arjun Halappa, Adrian D’souza, Rajpal Singh and Deepak Thakur to name a few in recent past.

Indian Oil Vs Air India in the Finals of Surjit Hockey Tournament

Defending Champions Indian Oil will lock horns with Air India in the finals of 28th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament on Saturday at 7-00 PM at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here. Experienced star studded Air India beat Namdhari XI by 2-0 in first semi final while defending champions Indian Oil thrashed Bharat Petroleum by 6-3 to set the finals as last edition. Lalit Upadhayay scored a brace for Air India against Namdharis. In the second semi final, Captain Deepak Thakur, veteran Didar Singh and Affan Yousuf scored 2 goals each for Indian Oil while for Bharat Petroleum, Gupreet Singh scored 2 goals and Jarnail Singh found the board once.
