Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) clinched a narrow victory over (2-1) Army XI at the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey 2012 Tournament, and which earned birth of semis for BPCL on basis of better goal difference.
While IOC defeated Air India (3-2) to finish at the top of Pool B and will take on BPCL in semi final on Saturday (15th Sept) at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Egmore, Chennai.
In another match of the day, Railways defeated ICF (3-1), to finish 3rd in Pool B, after IOC and Air India and followed by Customs and ICF. While defending champions ONGC finished at the top of Pool A and will take on Air India in first semi final, while 14th September is rest day.

Defending Champions ONGC defeated BPCL (5-2) to confirm their place in the semi-final of MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey 2012. ONGC are on the top of Pool A with 8 points from 4 matches with 2 wins and 2 draws.
Earlier, in the first match of the day at Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Army XI defeated PNB (3-2) in a close encounter to inch closer to the semi final birth. Now, Army XI need just a draw against IOB, who are yet to win a game in the tournament.

IOC and Air India are favorites from Pool B to reach the semi finals of MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey 2012 being played at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Egmore (Chennai), while 4 of the 5 teams from Pool A still stand a chance to reach the knock out stage.
BPCL and ONGC are at the top of Pool A with 5 points each from 3 matches (1 win and 2 draws), closely followed by PNB with 3 points from as many matches (3 draws), while Army XI has 2 points from 2 matches with 2 draws. IOB is the only team to taste loss in Pool A and has 1 point with 1 draw from 3 matches to bow out.
In Pool B, IOC and Air India have won both their matches, and need to win one more or a draw to reach the semi finals, while Railways also stand a chance to reach the knock out stage if they win their remaining two matches after having won against Customs. ICF and Customs are yet to earn a point in Pool A matches and are out of the race for the semis.
