Super Series Hockey 9s Line Up Complete, No India in this edition

Hockey Australia has announced line-up for hockey’s 2013 International Super Series Hockey 9s, which will played from 17 to 20 October 2013 at Perth Hockey Stadium, Perth (WA).

In the third edition of the tournament, 4 men’s and 4 women’s teams will be looking for the top honors. The innovative format of the tournament, has 9 players in a team on pitch with wider goal posts to create free flowing and entertaining hockey with high scoring opportunity.

Australia’s Hockeyroos will be joined by Canada, Malaysia and world champions Argentina in the women’s competition in Perth, WA. The line-up for the men’s tournament sees Australia’s world champ Kookaburras go up against Argentina, Pakistan and Malaysia, but India, who played in first two editions of the tournament, will give it a miss this edition. Mossley Hockey Club welcomes Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Canada to The Glade

A busy period for the Electric Ireland Senior Women’s team continues as they build towards the European Championship in August with games against Scotland and Wales in Belfast next week.

Irish Hockey Association LogoThe games follow on from the three match Canada series held in Dublin over the weekend (which was tied with one win each and a draw), and will give Darren Smith’s squad a chance to build on some inconsistent performances of late. Whilst the Green Army have been scoring from both open play and set pieces, they have also been prone to conceding soft goals and penalty corners, a problem they will hope to eradicate next week. They play Scotland on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, with Wales the opposition on Thursday. Continue reading →

Electric Ireland Senior Women share spoils with Canada

The Electric Ireland Senior Women’s Hockey team and Canada played out an eight goal thriller in UCD this evening to round off the series in the 3rd game following a win apiece for both sides on Saturday & Sunday respectively.

Irish Hockey Association LogoA quiet start to the game saw neither side really dominate the game until the game finally exploded into life as the ball found its way to Anna O’Flanagan who dinked the ball over the onrushing Williams in the Canadian goal to give Ireland a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Electric Ireland Senior Women’s Team Level the Series Against Canada at UCD

The Electric Ireland Senior Women’s team bounced back from yesterday’s disappointment to emerge 2-1 victors over Canada in wet and windy UCD today.

Darren Smith’s team were tougher in their fifty-fifty battles and breached the Canadian press much more so than in their first test.

Ireland made the better start and won their first penalty corner in the fourth minute when a pass from Watkins found O’Flanagan in the circle, popping the ball onto a Canadian foot. Continue reading →

Symmons earns 200th cap as Ireland fall to Canada

The Electric Ireland Irish Women’s team were beaten 3-2 by Canada at a wet & windy UCD today as Irish International Nikki Symmons earned her 200th cap for the Green Army. It is a phenomenal achievement for the Loreto Hockey Club player who was presented to the crowd at the National Hockey Stadium before taking the field to become the first Irish Hockey International to reach 200 caps for their country. Today also saw a 1st cap for Ireland’s Emily Beatty and a 50th Cap for Nicci Daly.

Irish Hockey Association LogoIreland’s performance on the pitch however did not match the occasion and a sluggish start to the game saw Emma Gray in the Ireland goal called into action early as Canada created the best of the early chances before taking a deserved 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
