Harjeet to lead India in Volvo U-21 Men Tourney 2015

The India Junior Men Team was announced today for the Volvo International U-21 Men Tournament 2015. The tournament will be played in the Netherlands from 18th July to 25th July 2015 in Breda.

Six teams will compete against each other in a Round-Robin format in the tournament. The Junior Hockey team of India will face the hosts Netherlands, Germany, England, Belgium and New Zealand will play for the top honors.

The Volvo International Tournament 2015 will provide a testing platform to the U-21 Men team, who are even gearing-up from the upcoming Men’s Junior Asian Cup 2015 in Malaysia and the FIH Junior World Cup 2016 (Men) 2016. Continue reading →

Butturini Stars as Burras beat Belgium for 5th Place

Goalkeeper Andrew Butturini was one of the stars for Australia’s Under 21 men, the Burras, as they claimed fifth place at the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

The Burras came from behind twice to take the European Junior Champions, Belgium, to a shoot-out before winning 3-2. The Queensland stopper thwarted his Belgian opponents on three occasions in the shoot-out, culminating in holding up Dimitri Cuvelier to run out the attacker’s eight second shot clock and secure victory.

National Junior Coach Paul Gaudoin said afterwards, “We started slowly, sluggishly, and our first half was not good. We lacked the energy and sharpness we needed but we turned it around in the second half. At half time we spoke about a few of the things we needed to do and we came out with the energy we needed – we were all over them in the second half.” Continue reading →

Australia beat New Zealand to Face Belgium for 5th place at Jr World Cup

New Delhi, 13 December 2013: In the second 5th-8th classification match, Australia and New Zealand played against each other at the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

The Burras, Australian under-21 men’s team, defeated Junior Black Sticks by 2-1 to set themselves up against Belgium, who defeated Korea by 6-1 in 1st 5th-8th classification match, for fifth place match, as Korea and New Zealand will fight it out for 7th place on Sunday. (Schedule here)

The trans-Tasmanian rivals, who played for bronze medal in the last edition of Junior World Cup, were clearly familiar with each other and play was neutralized in midfield for the opening twenty minutes. Continue reading →

Germany Edge Australia to set up Semi against Netherlands

New Delhi, 12 December 2013: In an exciting and thrilling quarter-final between Australia and Germany, the defending champions Germany won the match by 4-3 to set-up semi-final against Netherlands at the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi. Earlier in the day Netherlands defeated New Zealand in quarter-final by 3-2.

Australia had finished with maximum points in Pool B, while Germany suffered a defeat at the hands of Belgium on opening day.

National Junior Coach of Australia, Paul Gaudion declared after the match he was “extremely proud” of team’s performance saying, “The desire and fight the boys showed tonight was excellent. We gave ourselves a great chance to win against a very good team – a team we should perhaps have met later on in the tournament.

Burras Won 3rd in Row to top Pool B at Jr World Cup

The Burras, the Australian men’s U21 hockey team, marched on to the quarter-finals of the Hero Hockey Junior World Cup in New Delhi with a 2-0 win over Pool B rivals France. Earlier in the day, Argentina pipped Spain 1-0 in the other match of Pool B.

The result maintained the Burras’ 100% record at the tournament and sets up a last eight clash on Thursday against the second placed team in Pool A – either Belgium, Germany or Pakistan. The outcome of Pool A will be determined on Tuesday.

A terrific solo effort by Western Australian Frank Main and an arrow-straight penalty corner flick by South Australian Cameron Joyce sealed all three points and Pool B pole position for the Burras for whom Main was subsequently named Man of the Match. Continue reading →

Burras beat Spain 2-0 in Pool B of Junior World Cup

New Delhi, 8 December 2013: The Burras, the Australian men’s U21 team, defeated Spain by 2-0 to record their 2nd victory in Pool B of Hero Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in New Delhi.

After a goalless opening period, second half strikes from captain Daniel Beale and his fellow Queenslander Dylan Wotherspoon sealed all three points and put the Burras a step closer to a quarter-final place with only Monday’s pool match against France to come.
