Indian Railways and Manipur Enter Quarter-Finals of Men’s Senior National Championship (India)

Bangalore, Sept 28: Indian Railways and Manipur entered the quarter-finals of 2nd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship by winning hard-fought matches in their respective pools, here on Friday.

The Railways overcame talented Uttar Pradesh 3-1 to top pool F unbeaten while a youthful Manipur, coached by former India star Tikken Singh, overcame Association of Indian Universities 4-3 in Pool H to record their third win and advance to the quarter-finals.

Railways and Manipur joined defending champions Haryana (Pool A), Punjab (pool C), Air India (Pool E) and Tamil Nadu (Pool G) in the knock-out stage that commences on Sunday. Continue reading →

Punjab Enter Quarter-Finals of Men’s Senior National Championship (India), Manipur on Course

Bangalore, Sept 27: Gurjinder Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored thrice each as Punjab raced to a 7-2 win against the Services in their concluding pool C league game and entered the quarter-finals of Hockey India’s Second Senior National Men’s Hockey Championship, here on Thursday.

Earlier in morning session, Manipur pulled off a fine 9-3 win against fancied Bihar in a Pool H to strengthen their chance for Knock-Out stage. Now, Manipur need a draw in their Next Match against Combined Universities, to be played tomorrow (28th Sept) at 2:30 PM. After today’s 14-0 win against Andaman & Nicobar and draw against Bihar, Combined need to win the match against Manipur to be in Quarters.

In Pool F, Uttar Pradesh also recorded their second win when they hammered Tripura 24-0 with Chandan Singh and Mohd Amir Khan topping the scorers list with seven goals apiece. Continue reading →

Haryana in Quarters, Punjab vs Services match tomorrow will decide Pool C winner, in Men’s Senior National Championship (India)

BANGALORE, Sept 26: Haryana escaped with a draw against Maharashtra and confirmed their berth in the Quarter Finals of the Men’s Senior National Championship (India), where they will face the winners of Pool H in the quarter finals.

Indian team star Bharat Chhikara opened the scoring and talismanic mid-fielder Sardar Singh scored Equalizer for defending champions Haryana.

Bhopal defeated Puducherry 6-2 in the Pool A match, while Manipur scored 16 goals against the minnows – Andaman & Nicobar in Pool H.  Bihar and Combined Universities played 1-1 draw in the  2nd match of the pool.

Services defeated Jammu & Kashmir 18-0 in Pool C, and will face Punjab tomorrow (27th Sept) at 4:00PM in the Shantinagar Hockey Stadium, Bangalore. Winner of Punjab vs Services will be through to Quarters, however Services needs just a draw to be in final eight teams. Continue reading →

Air India and Tamil Nadu in Quarters of Men’s Senior National Championship (India)

BANGALORE, Sept 25: Defending champion Haryana continued its winning spree in the 2nd Hockey India Senior Men’s National Championship, setting for a 3-1 verdict against a fighting Puducherry for its third straight win in Pool A league here today, and are on course for a berth in the quarter finals. While, Maharashtra, who will face Haryana tomorrow (26 Sept) at 8:30AM, defeated Bengal (3-1) in the early morning match today.

Air India out classed Nagaland with the score board reading 16-0, to make three wins from three league matches and confirming their berth in the quarters. Air India will take on winners of Pool D in 4th Quarter Final on 30th September.

Tamil Nadu, who drew with Odisha in their campaign opener, won 16-1 against Kerala and qualified for the Quarter Finals on the basis of better goal difference (39), while Odisha defeated Gujarat 17-0 and managed to get a goal difference of 34. Continue reading →
