Hockey India announces 32 Probables for Olympic Qualifiers (Women’s)

indian-women's-hockeyThe Hockey India on Saturday announced the pruned list of 32 probables (women’s team) for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, leaving out 16 players from the first list. The qualifying tournament will be held in Majoy Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, from February 18 and the participating teams include South Africa, Italy, Canada, Ukraine and Poland.

The selectors – Olympians Col. Balbir Singh, BP Govinda, Syed Ali and Rekha Bhide alongwith the government observers Harbinder Singh and Dilip Tirkey – watched the recently concluded four-match Test series against Azerbaijan before selecting the 32 probables from 48 current campers.

Saba Anjum and Chanchan Devi (who is returning from an injury) are the notable exclusions from the probables. While Joydeep Kaur comes back after recovering from an injury, which she sustained during Australia tour of team India in 2011.

India blanked Azerbaijan in the Test series. According Hockey India release, “This reduced group of players will continue in the coaching camp for the preparations of the Olympic qualifiers. The final list of 18 players and standbyes will be announced early next month.”

Indian Eves to Play Azerbaijan at MDC National Stadium, New Delhi

Indian women’s team will play a 4 match test series against Azerbaijan at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on 15th, 16th, 18th and 19th January 2012 (3:00PM to 4:30PM) as a part of their preparatory camp for Olympic Qualifiers. These tests will not only provide invaluable experience for the players ahead of the Olympic Qualifications to be conducted at the same venue from 18 – 25 February, but also an opportunity for the selectors to identify the team for this Qualifying tournament.

Indian-Women's-Team-in-Argentina-12The 48 core probables are currently camping in the capital for their last phase preparation for Olympic Qualifiers. These core probables include the 18 members squad which visited South American Country Argentina to play 2 four nation’s tournament against South Africa, Ireland and hosts Argentina (the Las Leonas). Indian eves finished 3rd after the world champions Las Leonas (who are already qualified for London Olympics) and South Africa who will be traveling to New Delhi to take part in 1st qualifying tournament for London 2012. South Africans will be biggest challenge to be overcome by Indian women to book their tickets London.

Vinaya Returns to Camp, 2nd Phase Camp Starts in New Delhi

The core group of Indian men’s hockey team reach Delhi on Saturday from Bangalore for the second phase of the Olympic qualification preparatory camp. The camp got underway at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, on Sunday, which is also the venue of 1st Olympic Qualifiers for London Olympics 2012. Chief coach Michael Nobbs and exercise physiologist David Ian John  joined the probables for the camp after a short break in Australia for the Christmas and New Year.

Midfielder VS Vinaya, who is an expert on right flank, makes a return with the second phase of the camp. He last played for the country in the European tour in 2009, will aim to cement his place in the team after missing out during the whole important year of 2010, which included World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. During this period he represented Barcelona in the Spanish League for few seasons. “I am happy to be back in the Indian camp. During the time I was out I played a lot of domestic tournaments, but what helped me most was my stint with Barcelona,” he said.  While Yuvraj Walmiki and Rupinder Pal Singh are out of action for 2-3 weeks as they are recovering from injuries.
