The Great Britain women’s squad has been named ahead of hockey’s Investec London Cup in Chiswick. As a result of injuries and tournament regulations, the 18 athlete squad features several changes to that which was recently selected for the London Olympic Games.
Leicester defender Crista Cullen and Reading forward Alex Danson will play no part in the Investec London Cup as they continue their rehabilitation for an ankle and shoulder injury respectively. Both athletes sustained the injuries during Great Britain’s 2-0 victory over Argentina at the Olympic Test Event in early May. Welshwoman Sarah Thomas will also miss the Investec London Cup after injuring her ankle in training. THE Kookaburras kick started the continental leg of their European tour with an 8-2 victory in the first of two test matches against Belgium overnight.
With the Belgians in the middle of their club play-offs, national coach Colin Batch, the Australian who was assistant to Barry Dancer through the gold and bronze medal campaigns in Athens and Beijing was denied several of his star men.
However, the contest gave Batch the chance to look to the future and gave the Kookaburras an opportunity to rediscover the goal scoring form which temporarily deserted them in England. Continue reading →
In contrary to Chief Coach Michael Nobbs’ hints of fielding a relatively young squad in 21st Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, India will be going to Ipoh (Malaysia) in full strength to take part in the tournament to be held from 24 May to 03 June 2012.
Goalkeeper Bharat Chetri and mid-fielder Sardar Singh will be the captain and vice-captain of the 18 member Indian team, which is almost same as the team being fielded by India for Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament Men’s Four Nation Tournament to be held at Riverbank Arena, Olympic Park, London from 2-6 May, 2012 with only two changes. Rupinderpal Singh replaces Ignace Tirkey in deep defence, while Dharamvir Singh comes in place of Chinglensana Singh forward line .
The seven nation tournament will see fierce competition, on blue artificial pitch with yellow balls, from Argentina, Great Britain, India, Korea, New Zealand and Pakistan (all will be playing London Olympics) apart from hosts Malaysia.
Five winners of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, India will play their first match of tournament against New Zealand on 24 May, then followed by matches against Korea (25 May), Great Britain (27 May), Malaysia (28 May), Argentina (30 May) and Pakistan (31 May).

As in Olympic Qualifiers, Star midfielder Sardar Singh will be again take the role of deputy to Chetry in the squad, in which game changer in the mid of field Gurbaj Singh makes a comeback after being on side line due to injury since January. Promising India striker Yuvraj Walmiki could not find place in 18, who is nursing injury which got during the Olympic qualifiers. Another omission from Olympic Qualifiers squad is Rupinderpal Singh, who is put in the standby list.

The Black Sticks Women will take on USA (ranked 10th), India (ranked 13th) and old rivals Australia (ranked 7th) in a Four Nations from 12 – 22 April 2012. This Four Nations event will be played as two identical tournaments – so there will be two finals!
The second tournament will be played at Lloyd Elsmore Hockey Stadium from 18-22 April
