London Olympic Hockey Competitions WOMEN – Day 1: “Opening – Hockeyroos will take on Black Sticks”

The curtain raises at the Riverbank arena to open the Hockey competition of the 2012 London Olympics at 8:30 (BST) on 29th July with New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team taking on Australia in the opening game (Pool B). The 3 times Olympics Gold medalists Hockeyroos (Australian Women’s Hockey Team) will play Trans-Tasmanian arch-rivals Black Sticks as hockey fans from around the world support their country and the game, the Men’s competition will kick-start on Monday 30th July, as the Korean Men lock horns with the Black Sticks (New Zealand).

Hockey Australia LogoIf the Australian women’s hockey team are to medal in London, their first game against New Zealand is a must win and it is by no means a ‘give me’, especially with former Australian hockey champion Mark Hager at the Blacksticks helm.

Hager is a two-time Olympian who captained Australia to bronze at the 1996 Games in Atlanta and used to be an assistant coach in the Australian hockey program.

The 48 year old was inducted into Hockey Australia’s Hall of Fame in 2008 and took over the New Zealand women’s high performance program in 2009. Continue reading →

Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Melbourne 2012- Tickets on Sale

Australia’s sporting capital will host the 34th Men’s Champions Trophy in Melbourne this year, from December 1-9, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

This is the first international event following the Olympics and with the gold medalists to feature in Melbourne only a short time after, the Federation of International Hockey’s premiere event is set to sizzle with tickets expected to race out the door.

National Under 21 Men’s Hockey Championships Hit off in Tasmania

The Under 21 Men’s Hockey Championships hits off in Tasmania today, as the curtain raiser to the Olympic Games.

The Championships will be played in Hobart at The Tasmanian Hockey Centre and is sure to be action packed with all states and territories competing.

Kookaburras Name Kiel Brown and Andrew Charter(GK) as Olympic Reserves

Hockey Australia would like to congratulate Kookaburras defender Kiel Brown and goal keeper Andrew Charter, who have been named as the 17th and 18th player that will travel to London, as reserves for the Olympics.

These athletes are not members of the 2012 Australian Olympic team, unless they replace an injured or ill player in the 16 man team already selected.

Team management also plans to name a further two athletes (19 and 20) to take to London, to provide additional cover for the touring party.

These athletes will be identified on Saturday July 14, following the last practice match before the Kookburras leave for London on July 18. Continue reading →
