Indian Women beat Thailand 3-0, Men looking to continue Winning streak

Facing Thailand in their opening match of the 17th Asian Games today, the Indian Women Hockey Team starts their outing with a 3-0 win to earn full 3 points from the opener at Soenhak Hockey Stadium in Incheon. Yesterday, their men counter part defeated Sri Lanka 8-0 to start campaign on winning note.

Converting one penalty corner each successfully, it was Poonam Rani and Vice-Captain Deepika and a field goal from Vandana Katariya, ensured a 3-0 victory against Thailand and registering the team’s first win in the tournament.

Opening the first quarter, India had to wait until the 14th minute when Poonam Rani scored on set-piece in a penalty corner opportunity and opening the account for India. In the second quarter, the Thai defence stood strong and did not let India score any goal. Continue reading →

Indian Women’s Team Announced to 17th Asian Games 2014 Incheon

With the 17th Asian Games 2014 slated to begin from 19 September in Incheon, South Korea, 16-member Indian Women’s Hockey Team was announced today.

Experienced Mid-fielder Ritu Rani (184 Caps) will continue to lead the team, while Deepika (131 Caps) will be supporting her as vice-captain of the team in the most important Asian Games, whose winner will book a place in Rio Olympics 2016.

The 16-member team for the 17th Asian Games 2014 was selected by Hockey India selectors B P Govinda, Harbinder Singh and Surinder Kaur along with Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans and Chief Coach Neil Hawgood on the basis of their performance in the recently concluded XX Commonwealth Games 2014 and selection trials conducted at NSNIS in Patiala on 10 August 2014.
