Australian men’s hockey captain Mark Knowles has been named as the sport’s International Player of the Year for 2014. In the award was announced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Thursday, Dutch superstar Ellen Hoog has been unveiled as the women’s International Player of the Year for 2014.

The International Goalkeeper of the Year titles were dominated by the Netherlands players as Jaap Stockmann and Joyce Sombroek took the respective titles. While, previously called the Young Player of the Year, the International Male and Female Rising Stars of the Year both went to Argentina with Gonzalo Peillat and Florencia Habif scooping the Awards respectively.
The 30 year-old from Rockhampton, Queensland, topped the polling after leading the Kookaburras to dual gold medal success as Australia clinched the World Cup and Commonwealth Games titles within six weeks of one another. Continue reading →

The Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2014 has come to an end in Bhubaneswar, India with London 2012 Olympic Champions Germany taking the title by defeating Pakistan 2-0 in the final. Goals from Christopher Wesley and Florian Fuchs were enough to give Germany a superb 2-0 victory over Pakistan, with a sell-out crowd witnessed the Germans claim their 10th Champions Trophy Gold medal but their first since 2007.

The Bronze medal contest between Australia and India ended in another medal for World Cup winners, who overcame the host nation to take a 2-1 win. The final day began with the playoffs for 7th and 8th place, with England triumphing 3-2 against Belgium before Netherlands sealed 5th place by defeating Argentina 4-1.

Olympic Champions Germany defeated Pakistan in keenly contested final to win the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2014. World Champions Australia defeated hosts India 2-1 in Bronze Medal match at Bhubaneswar to continue their podium finish streak. Earlier in the day, World number side the Netherlands managed a fifth place finish with a 4-1 win over Argentina, after scoring four times in the final quarter to turn things around after trailing 1-0. Earlier Pool A topper England edged past 3-2 Belgium to avoid wooden spoon.

In the final, Christopher Wesley scored a field goal for Germany in 18th, but Germany had many chances in first two quarters and failed to utilize them. Pakistan came strongly in 3rd quarter and played good in final quarter as well. Germany Captain Moritz Feurtse played an areal ball, which was picked and finished clinically by Florian Fuchs. Olympic Champions Germany defeated World Champions Australia by 3-2 to reach the final of Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2014 in Bhubaneswar against Pakistan, who overcame the hosts India by 4-3 with a goal 2 minute from final hooter. Earlier in the Netherlands defeated Belgium 4-2 in shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in regulation to set-up fifth place play off against Argentina. Argentina edged past England by 2-1 in other 5th-8th classification match.

It means that an Asian team will be in the final of Champions Trophy after 1998, when Pakistan lost to Netherlands 3-1 to finish second and the World Champions Australia’s six-year domination of the competition will come to an end.
