#HWL2015: Netherlands score 7 past Indian eves, set up semi with Hockeyroos, Korea vs New Zealand in 2nd Semi

  • Hockeyroos, Black Sticks, Oranje and Korea reach women’s competition semi-finals
  • Line-up for end-of-year women’s showpiece Hockey World League Final is revealed
  • Antwerp’s ‘Final Four’ set to do battle for three guaranteed places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands and Korea sealed their places in the final four on a baking hot, drama-filled women’s quarter-final day at the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-Final 2015 in Antwerp.

They overcame the respective challenges of Italy by 2-0, Japan by 5-1, India by 7-0 and host nation Belgium by 3-0 in shoot-out after 2-2 draw in full-time. The four winners of quarter-final stage has reached semi-finals (to be played on Thursday, 2nd July) dand booked their tickets to the prestigious end of year Hockey World League Finals that will be played in Argentina. They will be joined in that event by Great Britain, China, Germany and Argentina, who all achieved qualification by securing top four finishes at the recent Hockey World League Semi-Final event in Valencia. Hawke’s Bay Cup: India beat Japan to finish 7th, USA defeated Argentina for 5th place

India saved their best till last at the Hawke’s Bay Cup women’s hockey tournament 2015, scoring two goals in the final quarter of the 7th & 8th playoff to beat Japan 3-2 after going down 2-0 early in the match. USA stunned their Pan-American rivals Argentina by 3-0 to finish 5th in the tournament.

7th-8th Place Match: India 3 (Sushila Pukhrambam 27, Deepika 54, Rani Rampal 57) beat Japan 2 (Mie Nakashima 9, Yukari Yamamoto 20)

5th-6th Place Match: USA 3 (Jill Witmer 20, Katie O’Donnell 26, Lauren Crandall 44) beat Argentina 0

The teams from Asia, India and Japan, had just one draw each to show for their 5 matches at the tournament and were desperate to avoid bottom place. Japan attacked strongly from the beginning of the first quarter and their reward came in the 9th minute when Mie Nakashima drilled home from in front of goal. India defeated by USA, to face Japan for 7th place, USA vs ARG for 5th: Hawke’s Bay

The women hockey team of India was defeated by USA in 5th-8th classification match at the Hawke’s Bay Cup 2015. In the other 5th-8th classification match Argentina edged past Japan by 3-2 to set-up Pan-American contest for 5th place (report in later half of this article).

The classification match between India and USA witnessed yet another round of an exciting clash as each team looked at creating pressure through their attacks and cashing on the opportunities. It was USA which managed to capitalize and going on to beat India 3-0.

Immediately into the match both teams started with an intention of score the initial goal and taking one up in the match. In the 10th minute USA got a penalty corner in their name which they converted through the stick of Kathleen Sharkey. Not wasting further time they doubled their accounts in the 14th minute Katie O’Donnell scored through a smart field goal. Wit 2-0 on board, USA was leading the first quarter. Continue reading →

Latest World Rankings released by FIH: India Steady at 9th (M) and 13th (W)

  • Australia men & Netherlands women hold firm at the top of the rankings
  • Belgium men leap-frog England into 4th while USA women move up to 5th

Lausanne – 26th March 2015: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has released the latest FIH World Rankings as of March 2015. These include points awarded following the completion of the Hockey World League Round 2 events.

In the FIH Men’s World Rankings, 2014 World Champions Australia (1), World Cup Silver medallists the Netherlands (2) and 2012 Olympic Champions Germany (3) continue to hold the top three positions, with Tom Boon’s Belgium moving into fourth place ahead of Ashley Jackson’s England, who drop to fifth. Argentina’s Los Leones retain sixth place ahead of New Zealand (7), Korea (8), India (9) and Pakistan (10).

Malaysia (12), Ireland (14), Canada (15), Japan (16), Poland (17), France (18), Egypt (20), Austria (22) and China (31) all secured top three finishes in the Hockey World League Round 2 events, reaching the Olympic qualifier Semi-Final phase and collecting crucial ranking points in the process. Although these teams have seen little change in their current FIH World Ranking on this occasion, their involvement in the upcoming Hockey World League Semi-Finals will generate even more points and could trigger some significant movement. India to play in Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey (W) in Hastings (NZL)

India’s women hockey team will feature in the 2015 Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey women’s tournament (Hawke’s Bay Cup) to be held from 11th to 19th April. Matches at the Festival of Hockey will be hosted at both the Regional Sports Park in Hastings and Park Island in Napier (New Zealand).

Next month, India will be playing in FIH World League Round 2, to be held in New Delhi from 07 – 15 March, 2015. Hawke’s Bay Cup (in April) will be good exposure for Indian women, who are expected to qualify for FIH World League Round 3 to be held in June, that is their final chance to book a place in Rio Olympics.
