V Baskaran appointed as Manager, High Performance (South Zone) Hockey India

New Delhi, 18th June 2014: With an aim to find fresh talents in the country and to benefit the game at all levels, Hockey India today announced the appointment of Olympic Gold Medalist V Baskaran as the Manager, High Performance (South Zone) Hockey India.

He was recently appointed as coach to assist current chief coach Terry Walsh before FIH World League Finals in Delhi in January 2014, and now he will be working under Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans. Baskaran was also the coach of Bhopal Badshahs in World Series Hockey 2012, a league with eight city franchises supported by Hockey India’s rival body Indian Hockey Federation .

In the new set-up, Former coach of the Senior Men Hockey Team, V Baskaran will be working in the direction of implementing the Hockey India development programme as part of overall High Performance programme for men and women hockey at the grassroots level including school, college and district level hockey in the South Zone of the country. Railways, Haryana & Air India reach Pune Hockey Nationals 2013 Quarter-finals

New Delhi, 2 June 2013: Indian Railways, Air India and Haryana entered the quarter-finals of the Pune Hockey Nationals 2013. They defeated Namdhari XI, MPHA and Maharashtra respectively on 6th day of the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2013 played at Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex in Pune to book their seats in knock out stage.

Air India defeated Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy 10-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals, to be played on 8th June.

Air India scored through Pradhan Somanna (11 min), Vikram Pillay (15, 66 min), Joga Singh (23, 54 min), Affan Yousuf (35, 37 min), Sameer Dad (60 min, Swamy Vinaya (62 min) and Arjun Halappa (68 min) while Vikas Choudhary (19 min) scored the only through Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy. Andaman & Nicobar stun Haryana, Air India, Namdhari XI and Chandigarh Win in Pune Hockey Nationals 2013

New Delhi, 30 May 2013: Andaman & Nicobar edged past last edition’s Semi Finalists Haryana 4-2 in Pool H match of the 3rd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2013 to register their second consecutive win.

Bijju Yirkal, Kusha, Chandan and Birsu scored a goal each for Andaman & Nicobar while Jitender Saroha scored two goals for Haryana.

Pradhan Somanna, Affan Yousuf and Joga Singh scored three goals each as Air India raced to a 15-0 win against Chhattisgarh in their Pool B league match of Hockey National Championship being played in Pune.

Air India notched their second win in the four team pool. Air India scored through Sameer Dad (2 min), Pradhan Somanna (5, 40, 66 min), Affan Yousuf (9, 31, 68 min), Joga Singh (18, 21, 25 min), Birendra Lakra (32, 63 min), Swami Vinaya (56 min), Cheeyanna Bopaiah (58 min) and Arjun Halappa (61 min) while their opponents Chhattisgarh fail to open their account. Senior Men’s Hockey National Championship 2013 to Start in Pune from 28 May

New Delhi, 27 May 2013: The 3rd edition of the Hockey India Senior Men National Championship will be played at Pune, Maharashtra from 28 May-10 June 2013.

In 2013 edition of the championship, as many as 38 teams will be participating in the championship which will be played on a league cum knockout basis on the Major Dhyan Chand Polygrass Hockey Stadium Pimpri and Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex in Pune.

This year four new teams including Comptroller and Auditor General, Sports Authority of India, Mumbai Hockey Association Limited and Namdhari XI will participate apart from 34 teams which participated in last edition. Continue reading →

Indian Railways and Manipur Enter Quarter-Finals of Men’s Senior National Championship (India)

Bangalore, Sept 28: Indian Railways and Manipur entered the quarter-finals of 2nd Hockey India Senior Men National Championship by winning hard-fought matches in their respective pools, here on Friday.

The Railways overcame talented Uttar Pradesh 3-1 to top pool F unbeaten while a youthful Manipur, coached by former India star Tikken Singh, overcame Association of Indian Universities 4-3 in Pool H to record their third win and advance to the quarter-finals.

Railways and Manipur joined defending champions Haryana (Pool A), Punjab (pool C), Air India (Pool E) and Tamil Nadu (Pool G) in the knock-out stage that commences on Sunday. Continue reading →

Punjab Enter Quarter-Finals of Men’s Senior National Championship (India), Manipur on Course

Bangalore, Sept 27: Gurjinder Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored thrice each as Punjab raced to a 7-2 win against the Services in their concluding pool C league game and entered the quarter-finals of Hockey India’s Second Senior National Men’s Hockey Championship, here on Thursday.

Earlier in morning session, Manipur pulled off a fine 9-3 win against fancied Bihar in a Pool H to strengthen their chance for Knock-Out stage. Now, Manipur need a draw in their Next Match against Combined Universities, to be played tomorrow (28th Sept) at 2:30 PM. After today’s 14-0 win against Andaman & Nicobar and draw against Bihar, Combined need to win the match against Manipur to be in Quarters.

In Pool F, Uttar Pradesh also recorded their second win when they hammered Tripura 24-0 with Chandan Singh and Mohd Amir Khan topping the scorers list with seven goals apiece. Continue reading →
