On 15th March 1975, exactly 40 years ago, the India’s Men Hockey team had won World Cup by defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the historic Finals of the 1975 Hockey World Cup. It was a moment of pride that day and it is a moment of pride for every Indian today, but India has failed to repeat the same feat again in these 40 years.

After 3 medals in first editions, Bronze, Silver and Gold in 1971, 1973 and 1975 respectively, India has failed to make it to top four in next 10 editions till 2014. India will host the 14th edition of prestigious hockey event in 2018, we wish good luck to Indian Hockey team for the event and expect them to better their performance, when hosts best of the best hockey teams at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.

India had defeated Pakistan in Final at Kuala Lumpur by 2-1 from 0-1 down to clinch India’s only World Cup title (Full match video of 1975 World Cup Final is available here). The felicitation cum team announcement event witnessed the presence of all the 13 Living legends alongwith the wives of Late Surjit Singh and Late Shivaji Parwar, brother of Late Mohinder Singh converge at the Hotel Holiday Inn, New Delhi. Hockey India felicitated each one of them with a one-time payment of Rs. 1,75,000. 38 Years ago, when most of the current hockey players and fans were not born, India defeated defending champions Pakistan to win their only World Cup title on 15th March 1975 in Kuala Lumpur. On the way to final India defeated reigning Olympic Champions Germany in pool stage and hosts Malaysia in the Semi-Final in extra time.

38 summers ago this day turned out to be a red-lettered day in the Indian sports. A team prepared under patronage of a State government – it was due to internal feud between two factions of Indian Hockey Federation, a familiar affair even nowadays – a low key team that lost to a Pan-American team in the pool shrugged off its lethargy in time and went on to win the World Cup, defeating two Asian giants, one in the semis others in the final. read more on stick2hockey.com
