Punjab Warriors beat Ranchi Rhinos 3-2 to emerge league toppers in HHIL 2014

Jaypee Punjab Warriors came from a goal down to eke out a hard-fought 3-2 win over defending champions Ranchi Rhinos to finish on top of the points table of the second edition of Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Ranchi today.

The win gave Jaypee Punjab Warriors five points to take their tally to 40 points from 10 games ahead of Delhi Waveriders (39 points).

Ranchi Rhinos finished their league engagements at the fourth spot with 26 points from 10 matches.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors defeated defending champions Ranchi Rhinos 4-2 in their penultimate league match to consolidate their second position in the points table of league stage of the Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) 2014 at the newly-built hockey stadium in Mohali.

The win gave Jaypee Punjab Warriors five points and took their tally to 35 points from nine game.

Ranchi Rhinos suffered their fourth defeat in the tournament and continued to occupy the fourth position in the standings with 24 points from nine matches.

Kalinga Lancers were in control of the match for major part of 70 minutes to avenge upon their 2-3 loss at the hands of same opponents in their previous meeting this year.

The first quarter saw both the teams adopting a cautious approach and were content to play the waiting game.

Waveriders beat Rhinos in their last match of HIL 2014 in Delhi

Last year’s runners-up Delhi Waveriders scored a late winner through Akashdeep Singh to beat defending champions Ranchi Rhinos 1-0 in a league match of the second edition of Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

The Delhi Waveriders, who are confirmed of a place in Semi-Finals, took a sweet revenge of their defeat 0-1 at Ranchi by the Rhinos in the initial stage of the league.

It was expected to be hard-fought but goal-scoring contest between two teams who were the finalists last year and it turned out to be one, albeit the fact that the first 35 minutes of the game failed to produce any goals.

Defending champion Ranchi Rhinos scored an early goal to beat Dabur Mumbai Magicians in a hard-fought league match of the second edition of Hero Hockey India League (HHIL) at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium in Mumbai today.
