After a successful run of four wins and one draw, table-toppers Jaypee Punjab Warriors tasted their first defeat, as Uttar Pradesh Wizards edged past them by 2-1 in 15th match of Hero Hockey India League 2015 at Dhyan Chand Sports College in Lucknow. It was VR Raghunath and Ramandeep Singh who stood tall and scored for their team whereas Jaypee Punjab Warriors’ captain Jamie Dwyer scored to reduce the deficit.

In the first quarter, host team Uttar Pradesh Wizards outplayed the visitors with their spirited performance and attacking moves, which stunned the opponents’ camp. Seven minutes into the game, UP Wizards drew first blood when they counter-attacked on Jaypee Punjab Warriors’ half and earned a penalty corner. Penalty corner specialist VR Raghunath converted it with a well placed flick beating Jaap Stockmann to score the first goal of the match. With this early lead, the home team attacked more aggressively and maintained the pressure on Jaypee Punjab Warriors. Their aggression paid again when they scored their second goal in the 9th minute. During their counter charge, forward player Ramandeep Singh received the ball in the opponents D and without giving any time to react to the defenders and custodian Stockmann, he hit the ball straight on the target taking the score to 2-0. The defending champions Delhi Waveriders are looking forward to face Dabang Mumbai at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium in Mumbai tomorrow at 1900HRS IST. The hosts are yet to claim their first victory in the Hockey India League.

The previous clash between both the teams proved to be fruitful for Delhi Waveriders who registered their first win in the League in Delhi with a 3-1 score. Delhi Waveriders clearly dominated the game in all four quarters not giving the opponent’s forwards any opportunity to get the better of them. Today, Ranchi Rays defeated Uttar Pradesh Wizards by 2-0, who will host Jaypee Punjab Warriors tomorrow at 1500 HRS in the third edition of Hero Hockey India League at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Lucknow. The win gave Ranchi Rays five points to take their tally to 14 points. They now share equal points with Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the pool standings.

Motivated with their victory in the last match played against Uttar Pradesh Wizards with a score of 3-2, Jaypee Punjab Warriors will be eyeing to bag their second consecutive win against the home team and further adding five points to its tally so as to retain its position in the points table. While the Jaypee Punjab Warriors has had a good run in the League till now, it aspires to keep the momentum running and will even be looking at going to the next level. After a clean sheet and 2-0 win against Kalinga Lancers at Bhubaneswar, Uttar Pradesh Wizards are confident and prepared to host the Ranchi Rays tomorrow. It will be a battle between Uttar Pradesh Wizards-co owned by Suresh Raina and captained by Edward Ockenden, and MS Dhoni owned Ranchi Rays, led by Ashley Jackson, tomorrow at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium at Lucknow.

After playing four matches in the League till now, Uttar Pradesh Wizards have bagged two wins, lost one and one game concluded as a draw. They are now sitting on the second position in the points table with 13 points, next only to Jaypee Punjab Warriors who are currently on top of the table. Uttar Pradesh Wizards will be looking at continuing their winning form against Ranchi Rays and aim to grab another five points. Continuing on their winning streak, Jaypee Punjab Warriors defeated Kalinga Lancers by 2-1 in their second meeting of the Hero Hockey India League 2015 at Bhubaneswar today from 0-1 down at half time.

Having an advantage of playing at their home turf, Kalinga Lancers showed positive signs in the opening stages and continued dominating the possession throughout the game. Jaypee Punjab Warriors without losing hopes struggled between the sticks and tried to keep up the momentum of the game and ended up turning the tables in their favor. Both the teams started on an attacking note and displayed a well contested first quarter but unfortunately neither of the teams failed to score even a single goal.
Moving ahead to the second quarter, Kalinga Lancers seemed to be more structured and confident with their strategies and showcased brilliant defence work. It was in the 24th minute that gritty Gurjinder Singh gave Kalinga Lancers a much awaited lead with a penalty corner conversion through a brilliant drag-flick. The defending Champions Delhi Waveriders defeated the newly formed Dabang Mumbai by 3-1 to register their 1st win in this season of Hero Hockey India League and picked 5 full points and to go up the ladder. Both the teams with two draws, one loss and no win to their credit, were seen playing for their 1st win of 2015 today at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.

Both teams were looking at putting the initial pressure on the opponent team from the word go. It was Delhi Waveriders which got its first penalty corner just 7 minutes into the game but was unlucky to capitalize on the opportunity. The breakthrough finally came in the 10th minute for the host team when Lloyd Norris Jones got a clean long pass at the opponent’s D and he made no mistake in ensuring he hit it cleanly through the legs of Dabang Mumbai goalie David Harte. Just minute left into the first quarter Lloyd Norris Jones was in action again at the opponent’s semi circle and he passed the ball to Talwinder Singh standing in front of the goal post but Talwinder could not complete the touch.
