World Series Hockey (WSH) is confident that the Indian National Hockey Team will come out with flying colours at the Olympics Qualifying Tournaments, starting February 18 in Delhi, and wishes them the very best for their campaign.
Before India’s first match against Singapore in the Men’s Qualifiers, Yannick Colaco, COO Nimbus Sport said, “The legacy of Indian hockey at the Olympics is unmatched with the national team winning 11 medals, including 8 gold medals. WSH is committed to promote hockey and hence has launched an incentive campaign – Strive For Gold to motivate the Indian team to play their best. Our current Indian team has tremendous potential and WSH wishes them the very best for their Olympic campaign”
With the objective to motivate and reward the Indian hockey players, WSH announces the following incentive plan for the 2012 Olympics:
- Indian team qualifies for the 2012 Olympics : Rs 5 lakh to every WSH player in the Indian Team
- Indian team wins Bronze Medal at the 2012 Olympics: Rs 50 lakh (divided equally amongst all WSH players in the team)
- Indian team wins Silver Medal at the 2012 Olympics: Rs 1 crore (divided equally amongst all WSH players in the team)
- Indian team wins Gold Medal at the 2012 Olympics: Rs 2 crore (divided equally amongst all WSH players in the team)

Experienced Goalkeeper Bharat Chetri will lead Indian Men’s hockey team in the Olympic qualifiers “Hero FIH Road to London” to be held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi from February 18 to 26. Indian two-wheeler giant, Hero MotoCorp Limited (HMCL) will be the title sponsor for the first men’s and women’s hockey Olympics Qualifying Tournament for the London Olympics.
While former captain Rajpal Singh, who is still not match-fit after an appendix surgery, and Gurbaj Singh who got injured during the camp are among the notable absentees in the squad of 18, while veteran midfielder Arjun Halappa could only make it to the list of four standbys alongside Manjeet Kullu, VS Vinaya and Chinglensana Singh.
India is the host of Olympic qualifiers for both men and women in the capital city of Delhi. The women’s team is scheduled to be announced later this week.
The Indian men’s team will be fight for the birth in London 2012 against Canada, France, Italy, Poland and Singapore, who replaced USA after they pulled out of the tournament in the eleventh hour.

The first of Olypic Qualification Tournaments (Men’s and Women’s) for London 2012 Olympics will be held in parallel from from 15th to 26th February 2012 in New Delhi, where both Indian teams will play the tournament in their final attempt to book the tickets for London Olympics.

Indian men’s team will get competition from Canada, who are just one rank below in current FIH ranking, while women’s will have to over come the stiff competition from South African, who are not only one rank above Indian eves but also opted to go through the Olympic Qualification process even after qualifying for the Olympics through African Olympic Qualification tournament recently. This way, South Africa is replaced by Argentina (Las Leonas) as an automatically qualified team, because Las Leonas were the highest-ranked team that was not automatically qualified (because of the shocking defeat against United States in the finals of Pan American Cup 2011).
The six winners of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments will join the nine men’s teams and nine women’s teams that have already punched their ticket to London.
The men’s teams that are already qualified for the 2012 Games are (listed alphabetically): Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa.
The women’s teams that are already qualified for London are: Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Great Britain, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand and the United States.

The FIH (International Hockey Federation) has announced the official dates for major competition for the year ahead, the six Olympic Qualification tournaments. The Olympic Qualifiers (Qualification Tournaments) for London 2012 Olympics will be hosted by three nations (India, Belgium and Japan) with a men’s and women’s tournament running in parallel.
The FIH Champions Challenge 1 from November 26 – December 4 in Johannesburg, South Africa and overlapping the FIH Champions Trophy in New Delhi, India from December 3 to December 11, 2011 will complete the calendar of 2011.
The FIH Women’s Champions Trophy in Argentina from January 28 to February 5, 2012 will mark the starting one of the busiest year in recent times, which has Olympics, Qualifiers in addition to regular annual tournaments of FIH. Continue reading →
