Olympic Champs come from behind against Australia

The Investec London Cup got off to a flying start this afternoon as reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands came from behind to seal a 2-1 opening day victory over the Hockeyroos of Australia at the University of Westminster Sports Ground in Chiswick. Blustery, chilly conditions greeted the two sides as they lined up ahead of a packed arena of more than 1000 hockey supporters; a moment Ashleigh Nelson of Australia will remember for a long time as she was awarded her 100th cap. GB squad named ahead of the Investec London Cup

The Great Britain women’s squad has been named ahead of hockey’s Investec London Cup in Chiswick.  As a result of injuries and tournament regulations, the 18 athlete squad features several changes to that which was recently selected for the London Olympic Games. Leicester defender Crista Cullen and Reading forward Alex Danson will play no part in the Investec London Cup as they continue their rehabilitation for an ankle and shoulder injury respectively.  Both athletes sustained the injuries during Great Britain’s 2-0 victory over Argentina at the Olympic Test Event in early May.  Welshwoman Sarah Thomas will also miss the Investec … Continue reading →

Las Leonas (Argentina) win first Champions Trophy on home soil

Silvina D’Elia scored lone for the hosts and word champions Argentina (Las Leonas) to secure their fifth title at an FIH Champions Trophy with a 1-0 victory over Great Britain and their first title of the FIH flagship tournament on home soil. The Olympic Champions, Netherlands, claimed the Bronze medal at the Argentina FIH Champions Trophy by defeating Germany 5-4 in an exciting match. Japan beat New Zealand 4-3 in extra-time to secure fifth place and to Qualify for next Champions Trophy. While Korea beat China 3-2 on penalties to finish 7th in the 8 team tournament. Argentina FIH 2012 Champions Trophy (Women’s)

The FIH announced today the match schedule for the Argentina FIH 2012 Champions Trophy to be played in Rosario, Argentina from January 28 – February 5, 2012. It will be the 20th edition of the women’s event and one that will carry several important story lines for the eight participating teams. First and foremost, the event will be the last major international tournament before the London Olympic Games in August 2012.
