Japan beat India 3-2 on Penalties in Women’s Hockey World League 2

New Delhi, 22 February 2013: Indian Women’s Hockey team came from 0-2 to down at half time to level the score 2-2 by scoring 2 goals after 60th minute of the game, but failed to capitalize on spirited come back in extra time and lost to Japan 3-2 in the penalty shootout in the Hero Women’s Hockey World League Round 2, Delhi 2013 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

With this defeat on penalties, India earned a point while Japan was rewarded with 2 points to equalize with India with 10 points in league standings.

Indian Men’s Hockey Team Sneak Past Ireland, Women’s Beat Fiji in World League 2 New Delhi

New Delhi, 21 February 2013: India men’s sneaked past Ireland with 3-2 victory while women’s team defeated lowly Fiji 10-0 to won their respective matches on fourth day of the Hero Hockey World League Round 2 Delhi 2013 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

Eleventh-ranked India men’s team beat fifteenth-ranked Ireland 3-2 in the toughest match of the tournament and remains top of the points table with nine points. Rupinder Pal Singh (16th min PC), VR Raghunath (39th min PC) and Dharamvir Singh (56th min) scored for India.

In reply, Conor Harte (27th min) and Eugene Darling (51st min) scored for Ireland and gave tough competition to opponent. Dharamvir Singh was adjudged as Player of the Match for his powerful attacks.

India will now face China on Saturday, 23 February 2013 at 20:00 and Ireland will play against China on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at 16:00.

In women’s tournament, 12th-ranked India won against 59th-ranked Fiji 10-0 and dominated through-out the match. Soundarya Yendala converted an early penalty corner into the first goal for India in the 7th minute followed by Nmamita Toppo in the 11th minute. Continue reading

Indian Women’s Team beat Malaysia 3-0 in Hockey World League 2 Delhi

New Delhi, 19 February 2013: Continuing on their winning momentum, Indian women’s team defeated Malaysia 3-0 on the second day of the Hero Hockey World League Round 2 Delhi 2013 played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

Player-of-the-match, Vandana Katariya scored a brace for India, while young star Rani Rampal sounded the board once.

India converted an early penalty corner into a goal in the 9th minute of the game through Vandana Katariya, when she deflected the hard hit from Joydeep Kaur. In the 38th minute of the game Vandana struck again by beating the Malaysian players and scooped the ball into the goal post to convert the second goal for her team.

Rani Rampal scored a beautiful goal to complete the tally to 3-0 for India in the 65th minute of the match.

Earlier during the day, Russia defeated Fiji 9-0 and Japan beat Kazakhstan 11-0 in a one sided game.

India will now face Fiji on Thursday, 21 February 2013 and Malaysia will play against Kazakhstan on 21st February 2013 (Schedule and results).

Indian Women Start Hockey World League 2 on Winning Note, Beat Kazakhstan 8-0

New Delhi, 18 February 2013: Indian women’s hockey team started their campaign of Hero Hockey World League Round 2 Delhi 2013 on winning. The hosts defeated Kazakhstan (FIH Rank #33) 8-0 in their 1st match of the tournament played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.

Indian young star Rani Rampal returned to action with a bang after staying on sidelines for more than a year due to injuries and score 3 goals in the match, while Player-of-the-match Jaspreet Kaur found target 4 times and Soundarya Yendala scored once for India.

India played some attacking and scored goals at regular interval as Kazakhstan tried to settle down, who are 20 places behind India in FIH Rankings.

Confident Fiji Open Hockey World League 2 Campaign against India

New Delhi, 17 February 2013: Six men’s team and six women’s team will fight for top spots of the Hero Hockey World League Round 2 Delhi 2013 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium from 18 to 24 February 2013, which will be live on Ten Sports in India. The competition will be played in a round-robin league format and top two teams from each league will qualify for the FIH Hockey World League Round 3 i.e. Semi Final of round of the 2 year long league.

India men’s team, which is ranked 11, will face the first match against Fiji, ranked 70, on 18 February at 20:00 pm. Fiji men’s team coach Hector Rockee said the their team will give a tough fight to India. “India is a strong team and our team is quite young. Indian senior and junior men’s and women’s hockey teams’ jerseys will have Cairn India’s logo for next three years, after the world’s fastest growing energy company announced its co-sponsorship for the teams. According to press release, this association is for a sum of several crores per annum.
