Ranchi Rays edged past Uttar Pradesh Wizards by 1-0 at their home turf, Astroturf Hockey Stadium, Morabadi (Ranchi) to stay on course for semi-final spot and rooted to second place in points table in ongoing Hero Hockey India League 2015.

With both Ranchi Rays and Uttar Pradesh Wizards sitting with a total of 19 points after playing six matches each in the season, were seen battling it out today in Ranchi, in order to take their respective lead a notch up in the league. Last edition’s finalists, Jaypee Punjab Warriors scored 7 past the defending Champions Delhi Waveriders to be the first team to reach Semi Finals of 3rd Hero Hockey India League 2015 in style. The match saw second hattrick of the season as Indian drag flick specialist Sandeep Singh scored 3 goals for his team.
Jaypee Punjab Warriors stuck to the plan chalked out by Head Coach Barry Dancer, to start the game with speed rather than coming into form slowly and in the process allowing the opponents to score the initial goals. Following the strategy, Jaypee Punjab Warriors struck just ten minutes into the game and thereon there was no looking back as they rained goals on the defending Champions leaving them stunned and frustrated.

In the first quarter of the match, table-toppers Jaypee Punjab Warriors started the match with their skilful domination and acute ball possession while keeping the visitors busy with their continuous attacks. In the tenth minute, Jaypee Punjab Warriors managed to earn a crucial penalty corner where the teams’ deadly duo – Jamie Dwyer and Sandeep Singh – took their favourite positions. Among the world’s best drag-flickers, Australia’s Jamie injected the ball into the pack and Sandeep Singh did not waste a moment to hit the ball hard into the box, beating Delhi Waveriders’ defenders and goal-keeper Rassie Pieterse. Ranchi Rays’ Captain Ashley Jackson lead from front to beat Kalinga Lancers by 4-0 at Ranchi in the Hero Hockey India League 2015. The English drag flicker specialist, aka David Beckham of Hockey, scored first hattrick of the season in the revenge of their defeat at Bhubaneswar by 6-3 in the opening game.

A mammoth effort by the men in red and a momentous show by Captain Ashley Jackson helps Ranchi Rays move to the second place in the points table. With today’s hattrick Ashley Jackson also became the highest goal scorer of the seaon with six goals to his personal tally.
The first quarter of the match saw both Ranchi Rays and Kalinga Lancers playing an attacking game from the very beginning of the match as the circle penetration was attempted frequently by both the sides. Where, Kalinga Lancers were awarded three consecutive penalty corners within the first five minutes of the game itself. They failed to convert any and strongly felt the absence of the young penalty corner specialist Gurjinder Singh. It was Delhi Waveriders who scored the maiden goal in the first quarter and led the game 1-0 till the end of the third quarter. Goals started coming in the fourth quarter where Dabang Mumbai made their sole strike and Delhi Waveriders added two more to the tally, ending the game with a 3-1 win.
