Defending champions the Indian Men Junior Team departed yesterday night, 6th October, to participate in the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup, which is scheduled from 11th October to 18th October in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
After a month long preparation camp, the young colts are upbeat to face challenges in the tournament and will play hard to win the title for the third consecutive time. The Junior Team will be facing the challenge from Australia, Great Britain, Pakistan, Argentina and hosts Malaysia. All set to play their first match against Pakistan, the team looked upbeat and confident before they departed for the much awaited tournament.
Speaking ahead of the departure Coach, Harendra Singh said, “We know that we are the defending champions of this tournament but in this edition, we will start fresh and new ideas. What happened in the last edition is history now and we have to perform better than other teams. Every game is important for us and we have been preparing ourselves team by team. All the participating teams are competitive, but Australia and Great Britain are quite tougher than others. We need to play an attacking game against these two teams to yield positive results. Team is confident and well-prepared. We will give our best in this tournament.”
Speaking on the Sultan of Johor Cup, Captain Harjeet Singh added, “We have been working hard for this tournament in the recently concluded Preparation Camp. The camp was productive and helped us to overcome our weaknesses in few areas. The tournament will be exciting as there are some good teams are participating. We are ready for our first match against Pakistan and we don’t have any pressure to play against the Asian team. We will go match-by-match and tackle each team differently. Our aim is to gain maximum out of each match. If everything goes well as per our plan, then we will surely bring the trophy home for the third time.”
Commenting on the team’s preparation for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup, defender Vikramjit Singh said, “We are once more confident of putting up a great show ahead in the tournament. I am excited and look forward to the upcoming challenge. I am even looking at working on how best to strengthen our defence line in order to increase the contribution towards the team. Also, with a strong defence line, I am confident we will not allow the opponents to break our defence chain easily. The team is working hard on closing the gaps which will allow us to take ball possession and going into counter attack.“
Speaking on the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup, forward Arman Qureshi said, “The team is very confident of the fact that we are the two-time champions of the Sultan of Johor Cup and we look to retain the title this time around too. This has made us even more positive of playing the matches ahead. During our practice sessions, we have made good progress and aim for a better penalty corner conversion rate. We want to make our attack even stronger in the upcoming matches and look forward to carry out our game strategies firmly to claim the title.”
