The 32nd edition of the Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, will be held in Jalandhar Olympian Surjit Astroturf Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park from October 30 to November 5. And the 2nd edition of the Bengaluru Cup will be organized by Hockey Karnataka from 10th-19th October at KSHA Hockey Stadium in Bangalore.
After a successful first edition last year, Hockey Karnataka announced the second edition in the presence of guests of honor Rahul Dravid and Nisha Millet. The occasion also saw the unveiling of the official uniform of team Karnataka XI, by star hockey players from the state.
The Bengaluru Cup 2015 will feature 6 teams from across India in both the Men and Women’s categories of the sport, competing against each other to clinch the title. The team will have line-up of players who have represented team India and displayed remarkable performance across various international tournaments.The teams battling it out at the tournament are Air India, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Army XI, Karnataka XI and ONGC in the Men’s category and Punjab XI, Haryana XI, Karnataka XI, Jharkhand, MP Academy and RCF in the Women’s category.
The highlight of The Bengaluru Cup 2015 will be the presence & participation of players from the national women’s team which has qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics- an extremely impressive achievement for the said team after close to four decades.
The 32nd Surjit Hockey Tournament (annual tournament in the memory of ex-Olympian Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa) will be played on knockout-cum-league basis. 14 top ranking teams in Men Section, including Last Year’s Champion Indian Oil and runners up team Punjab & Sind Bank will take part in this 7 days hockey bonanza. The other teams, are Namdhari-XI, CAG, Border Security Force (BSF), Bharat Petroleum, Punjab National Bank, Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Army-XI, Indian Railways, Punjab Police, CRPF and Punjab-XI (Pakistan). Punjab-XI (Men), Lahore (Pakistan) have confirmed their participation but their visas are still in pipeline.
Three teams have been placed in Knockout-cum-Qualifying Round of Surjit Hocekyt Tournament while 11 teams including Pakistani team have been seeded directly into League Stage. One team will qualify for league from the Knock Out-cum-Qualifying Round Matches. The league stage matches will be from Oct. 30 to Nov; 3. The both semi finals of the tournament will be played on November 4 and the finals men section will be held on November 5.
Mostly, all the matches of the Surjit Hockey tournament will be played under flood lights and no gate entry money will be charged from the spectators who will come to witness the game of hockey. International Umpire Haider Rasool from Pakistan will supervise the matches of the tournament. A committee for the smooth conduct of the tournament has also been formed.
The Surjit Hockey Tournament 2015 winner team will get Rs. 5.00 lacs, sponsored by Tut Brothers of USA, the leading transporters, farmer and the Owners of California Eagles Team of the World Kabaddi League whereas the runners up team will be pocketed Rs. 2.50 lacs. This cash prize has been sponsored by Charanjit Singh Channi, Chairman, CT Group of Institutions. The Best player of the tournament will get Late Sardar Mohinder Singh Tut Memorial Award along with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. The is prize is Sponsored by Ranbir Singh Rana Tut of Victoria Gardens.
As in the past 25 years, this year also, the Asia’s largest and leading Maharatna Oil Company Indian Oil Corporation Limited will be the title sponsor of the tournament whereas The Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi, CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar, Uppal Hospitality Group (UHG) Hong Kong, Pukhraj Health Care Pvt. Ltd; Tut Brother of USA, Punjab National Bank, HDFC Bank will be the co-sponsors of the Surjit Hockey tournament.
Under the slogan “Watch Surjit Hockey-Win ALTO Car”, this year also Surjit Hockey Society has also decided to award Maruti ALTO Car, Motor Cycles, Refrigerators and LCDs to the spectators, who will come to witness the Surjit Hockey matches. The ALTO Car has been sponsored by Chander Shekhar Marwaha, Chairman, IJM Group of Nakodar. The spectators will get daily lucky coupons till Nov. 5 at the entry gate of the stadium while players will be issued the lucky coupons on the day of their first match. The lucky draw for the ALTO Cars and other prizes will be held on Nov. 5, soon after the final match. The main idea is to attract & to create more interest amongst the general public for our national game of Hockey.
The aarrangements have been made for the LIVE telecast of both the Semi Finals & Final Match of the tournament on PTC Channels on 4 and 5 of November, respectively. All India Radio, Jalandhar will also relay the ‘Ball-to-Ball’ running commentary of the final match.
The renowned Punjabi Folk Singer Ranjit Bawa, konwn for his famous songs “Yaari Changigarh Walie Ne Teri, Kara Gai Hatth Yaar De Kharhe”, will entertain the spectators during the Cultural programme, before the start of the final match on Nov. 5 from 5.00 pm onwards. NRI Gary Johal of Penticton (Canada) has sponsored the cultural programme.
