The FIH World League Round – 2 (Women) is all set to make a start on the 7th of March 2015 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi in India. The turf will witness eight international women hockey teams take on each other with the sole objective to win and advance to the semi finals of the League.
The Indian Women Hockey Team was touring Spain to play matches in preparation for the FIH World League Round 2. Playing five games at Valencia, two against Spain, one each against the two Dutch hockey clubs – GCHC and HDM and Germany, the team India was seen giving a tough fight to their opponents on the foreign turf prior to the upcoming FIH World League Round 2. The girls from India were appreciated for their on-ground skills and team coordination as they dished out some noticeable performances at Spain.
The League holds importance as each team will look at winning and going on to play the World League Round 3 which is the final stage of qualification for the 2016 RIO Olympics. The Indian team, post their great show at Spain will look at winning and proceeding to the next round of the League.
Divided into two pools of four teams each, India is placed in Pool A with women from Poland, Ghana and Thailand, while Malaysia, Russia, Kazakhstan and Singapore are placed in Pool B. The women will lock horns with each other in the Pool matches starting March 7th as they will bring into play the best of their strategies and the finest tricks of the trade to defeat their opponent and move forward to the quarter finals. The inaugural match of the League will see Malaysia clashing with Kazakhstan while the Indian eves will begin their campaign in the League by taking on Ghana on the opening day at 20:00 HRS IST.
Speaking on Spain tour, Coach of India C.R Kumar said, “I am very happy with the team’s performance as they played some really good game of hockey at Spain. The women team had fine coordination on the field as they created a number of scoring prospects for themselves along with restricting the opponents. The tour was a big success, providing new experience to the team as they even played two matches against the men from the Dutch hockey clubs and I am sure it will help the women considerable in the impending World League Round 2.”
Happy with the tour, India Captain Ritu Rani said, “It was a good experience for us to play against different teams and it has provided us with much valuable experience. We got to know our strengths as well as our loopholes which we will definitely work upon before the commencement of the World League Round 2.”
