BANGALORE, October 17: Domestic circuit kings Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) emerged winners of inaugural men’s Bangalore Cup 2014 All-India hockey tournament, while Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy bagged the the women’s tournament.

IOCL extended their dominance over Air India with a 2-0 victory to continue their dominance in domestic. MPHA edged Haryana on shoot-out 2-1 after have scores level at 3-3 after regulation time.

The winning teams received Rs 2.5 Lakhs each while the runners-up were presented with Rs 1 Lakh apiece. The Player of the tournament, Ramngaihzuali and Deepak Thakur, went home richer by Rs 25,000 each. Karnataka Olympic Association president K Govindaraj gave away the prizes.

Starring in IOCL’s triumph were former India forward Prabhjot Singh who scored in the sixth minute off a Gangandeep Singh pass and Deepak Thakur another international, who deflected home Hamza Mujitaba’s shot past the 25th.

IOCL enjoyed an untroubled 70 minutes as they toyed with Air India who in contrast just could not find a way past the tight rival defence where goalkeeper Baljit Singh was outstanding.

In the women’s final, MPHA squandered leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before getting past Haryana by an aggregate score of 5-4 via sudden-death after finishing regulation period tied 3-3.

In the tie-breaker, the teams failed could convert just once from five attempts through Shivani Singh (Acadmy) and Kiran (Haryana). In the sudden-death that followed, Neha failed to convert for Haryana while skipper Reena Kochar came good to clinch the issue for Academy.

Earlier, Ramngaihzuali put Academy ahead, capitalizing a pass from Reena Kochar in the eighth minute and Rakhi Prajapathi made it 2-0 in the 26th when she flicked home from close following a Kochar-Shivani Singh move.

Haryana showed some urgency on resumption and pulled one back in the 47th when Jyoti Gupta scored off a rebound after Neha’s try came off goalkeeper Swati, but the Academy girls struck back two minutes later through Disha Tiwari’s penalty corner conversion.

Haryana pressed on and forced a penalty stroke in the 51st minute which Jaspreet converted and Nickey then hammered home a 62nd minute penalty corner to tie the scores at 3-all.

The results Bangalore Cup 2014 Finals:

MEN: IOCL 2 (Prabhjot Singh 13, Deepak Thakur 25) beat Air India 0.

WOMEN: MP Academy 3 (Ramngaihzuali 8, Rakhi Prajapathi 26, Disha Tiwari 47) drew Haryana 3 (Jyothi Gupta 45, Jaspreet 51, Nickey 58). Academy won tie-breaker 2-1.
