BANGALORE, October 16: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd edged out Army XI 2-1 in the concluding league match of 1st Bangalore Cup 2014 All-India hockey tournament, here on Thursday to record their fourth consecutive win and making way for Air India into the finals.
Going into the match, Army XI, with four points in the kitty, needed to win to join league toppers IOCL in the title round. Thus, Army XI’s defeat saw Air India, with six points, scramble into the final that will be played on Friday at 6 pm.
With this win IOCL topped the league table with 12 points, Air India finished second with six, followed by Bharath Petroleum (4), Army XI (4) and Karnataka XI (3).
IOCL, their India stars who are currently attending a National camp, scored twice in the first half as Jaswinder Singh found the net after accepting a return pass from Deepak Thakur, and then Thimmanna helped home Gagandeep Singh’s goal-bound ball.
Army XI kept their composure and hit back from a counter-attack in the 28th minute with Binay Bhengra sounding the boards.
In the second-half, Army XI applied tremendous pressure, but their forwards were repeatedly off target with their attempts.
Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy maintained their unbeaten run in the league by defeating Haryana 2-0 to finish on top of the league table in the six-team women’s competition. MPHA finished with 13 points and Haryana second with 12. The two teams will meet again on Friday in the final commencing at 4 pm.
The Academy girls dominated the first-half as Karishma Singh who put home Reena Khokhar’s diagonal pass and Shivani Singh deflected Ramngaihzuali’s cross. Haryana fought hard in the second-half but without success while wasting six penalty corners.
Western Railway drubbed Tamil Nadu XI 16-0 with Navneet Kaur and Anupa Bala scoring four goals apiece in an inconsequential league match.
Western finished third in the league with seven points, ahead of Central Railway (7), Karnataka XI (4) and Tamil Nadu XI (0).
