BANGALORE, October 14: Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) defeated Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) 5-2 to record their third win and reached the final of inaugural Bangalore Cup 2014 All-India hockey tournament.

For IOCL who led 3-1 at the break, Gurjinder Singh converted two penalty corners on either side of a Deepak Thakur goal and Prabhjot Singh struck twice late in the game while BPCL’s reply came from penalty corners through Gurpreet Singh, who later failed with a penalty stroke, and Tushar Khandekar.

The victory took IOCL’s tally to nine points in the five-team men’s competition while BPCL have lost two of their three matches and drawn the other.

A hat-trick by penalty corner specialist Ganganpreet Singh featured Air India’s 6-2 win over young Karnataka XI. Air India completed their league engagements with six points while the home team remained on three following their second defeat in three outings.

Air India took early lead when Muthanna BK deflected home a Joga Singh diagonal from the right in the fourth minute. Ganganpreet then converted three penalty corners before Kusha KP found the net on second attempt after being put through by Shesha Gowda in the 34th minute.

On resumption, Karnataka XI showed more aggression, but paid penalty for missing chances as Joga Singh hammered home two goals from open play in the 39th and 49th minutes to give Air India a 6-1 advantage.

In the 54th minute, Karnataka pulled one back through Biddappa KD who flicked the ball in from a goalmouth scramble.

Earlier, Haryana overcame Central Railway 2-0 for their third straight victory in as many matches to move closer to a berth in the final of the six-team women’s competition.

Two second-half goals by Jyoti Gupta, in the 43rd and 64th minutes carried Haryana through while Central Railway slid to their second defeat in four matches.

In another women’s match Karnataka XI were given a run for their money by a young Tamil Nadu XI as the home team won 4-3 for their first win in four matches while the visitors suffered third consecutive defeat.

For Karnataka, Sandhya HP scored twice in the 42nd and 54th minutes after Komala BM (12th) and Muthamma PG (15th) opened the account. For Tamil Nadu XI, M Cladisando (28th), K Kamalavathi (30th) and Vijaya Lakshmi (55th) scored.

Men: IOCL 5 (Gurjinder Singh 7th, 32nd, Deepak Thakur 15th, Prabhjot Singh 66th, 69th) beat BPCL 2 (Gurpreet Singh 26th, Tushar Khandekar 62nd).

Men: Air India 6 (Muthanna BK 4th, Gaganpreet Singh 14th, 22nd, 30th, Joga Singh 39th, 49th) beat Karnataka XI 2 (Kusha KP 34th, Biddappa KD 54th).

Women: Karnataka XI 4 (Komala BM 12th, Muthamma PG 15th, Sandhya HP 42nd, 54th) beat Tamil Nadu 3 (M Cladisando 28th, K Kalavathi 30th, Vijaya Lakshmi 55th).

Women: Haryana 2 (Jyoti Gupta 43rd, 64th) beat Central Railway 0.

Tomorrow (15th Oct 2014)’s fixtures:

Women – Western Railway vs Haryana (10 am); Tamil Nadu vs Central Railway (12 Noon); MP Academy vs Karnataka XI (2 pm).

Men – Bharat Petroleum vs Karnataka XI (4 pm).
