BANGALORE, October 13: A brilliant hat-trick by Chandan Aind helped Army XI overcome Air India 5-3 to keep the fight for a final berth open in the men’s section of the inaugural Bengaluru Cup All-India hockey tournament, while Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy defeated Tamil Nadu 9-0 in women’s competition.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd remain unbeaten at the top of the table with six points from two matches in the men’s section, Army XI have four points from three matches and remain in the running for a berth in the final while Air India have three from three outings.
Army XI surprised the Air India by striking a field goal in the very fourth minute through Arun Kumar, but after a fair share of exchanges, Samir Dad restored parity in the 28th minute as the teams went into the break on equal terms.
After the breather, Air India forged ahead twice with Indian internationals VS Vinay and Vikram Pillai scoring in the 50th and 60th minutes, but the Army XI were quick to strike back and stepped up the pace towards the end with Chandan Aind converting two penalty corners to make it 3-all.
Thereafter, Aind scored from another penalty corner to give Army XI a 4-3 advantage in the 68th minute to achieve his hat-trick before Binay Bhengra found the boards in the final minute to give his side a 5-3 decision.
Earlier, in the women’s section, young Tamil Nadu goalkeeper Karen Johnson made more than a dozen saves but that did not stop MP Academy from winning 9-0.
Mizo girl R Ramngaihzuali scored three and Shivani Singh struck twice, while Anuja Singh, Rakhi Prajapathi, Karishma Singh and Manmeet Kaur completed the tally.
