28th May 2014: His Royal Highness, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah (Sultan of Perak), passed away today at the age of 86. He is regarded as ‘Father of Malaysian Hockey‘ for contribution towards the sport in Malaysia.

Sultan Azlan Shah was an accomplished lawyer, became Lord President of Malaysia, a highest judicial position in Malaysia and served the country as 9th King of Malaysia. Sultan Azlan Shah served as President of Malaysian Hockey Federation for 21 years and as President of the Asian Hockey Federation since 1990. He was also the Vice-President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for two terms since 1992.

Under his stewardship, Malaysia hosted two hockey World Cups — 1975 and 2002 editions. In 1997, Sultan Azlan Shah was elected as the president of the Asian Hockey Federation and he held the post until his demise today. He leaves an indelible mark on countless people and on the Asian Hockey Federation. Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament is the brain child of Sultan Azlan Shah; which is a regular feature of Malaysian Hockey Federation’s calendar of activities for the last 23 years.

Sultan Azlan Shah was an important and passionate member of our Executive Board and we are very saddened by this news,” said Leandro Negre, President of FIH. “Our condolences go out to his Royal Highness’ entire family and especially his wife, Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun, his son, Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah and three daughters, Dato Seri Raja Azureen, Raja Eleena and Raja Yong Sofia.

This is a great loss for the hockey world as Sultan Azlan Shah was an icon in hockey,” added Kelly Fairweather, FIH CEO. “His commitment to grow hockey and his dedication as an ambassador for the sport will truly be missed.

Speaking on the sad demise, Dr. Narinder Batra, General Secretary, Hockey India said “with great grief and sorrow, Hockey India would like to express its condolence for the departed soul of Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah. It’s a sad day for the game of hockey across the world. May his soul Rest In Peace”.

Akhtar Rasool Chaudhary, President PHF, Rana Mujahid Ali, Secretary General PHF along with  Islahuddin Siddiqui, Chairman National Selection Committee, Shahnaz Sheikh, Manager/Head Coach Pakistan Senior Hockey Team, Manzoor-ul-Hassan, Manager/Head Coach Pakistan Junior Hockey Team, Qasim Zia, Vice-President Asian Hockey Federation, Muhammad Asif Bajwa, Member AHF Council and Staff of Pakistan Hockey Federation offered their condolences. And prayed that Allah Almighty may rest the departed soul in His Infinite Mercy.

The PHF Management also prayed fortitude, courage and strength for the members of the bereaved family, peoples of Malaysia, Malaysian Hockey Federation, Malaysian Hockey Confederation, Asian Hockey Federation and hockey playing fraternity of Asia/World.

Raja Azlan also made significant contributions to the sport of hockey, and was president of the Asian Hockey Federation and executive board member of the International Hockey Federation.
The Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament is hosted annually in the Perak capital of Ipoh.
