13 March 2014: Assam defeated Goa 16-0 in the first match of the 4th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2014 (Division B), which got underway in Bhopal today. In the other matches of the day, Delhi defeated Gujarat by 15-0, while Bengal and Himachal Pradesh also started the tournament on winning note.
Assam started putting the pressure right from the third minute of the game when Moully Yadav scored the first goal against Goa. Moully went on to score a total of four goals in the match and thereby helped the team to take the lead by a huge difference of 16-0. The other key scorers from Assam were Pooja Choudhary, Dolly Yadav and Shikha Singh. Goa’s poor defence and attack pulled them to defeat by 16-0.
Bengal Hockey Association registered their maiden win against Vidarbha Hockey Association 3-0. Bengal showed their competitive skills by not letting Vidarbha to score a single goal in the entire match. Through the penalty corner earned in the 10th minute of the first half of the match, Shashi Punam Kullu dextrously scored the first goal. Bengal’s proficiency was further showcased by the consecutive goals scored in the 29th and the 48th minute of the first and second half respectively by Sushila Tirkey, leading them to win 3-0, whereas Vidarbha Hockey Association failed to deliver on the opportunities.
In another match of Pool B, Himachal Pradesh had an easy win over Uttrakhand with the former winning the match with 7-0. It was Sonia Rani’s 3 goals alongwith Pooja Devi’s and Rachna Jamalta’s 2 goals each which gave Himachal Pradesh the first win in its opening match of the tournament.
The match started with Himachal Pradesh going on the attack immediately and just 8 minutes in the game Sonia Devi scored the first goals for the team and within a minute it was Pooja Devi who struck the 2nd goal taking the score to 2-0. In the 18th minute Sonia Devi scored her second goal and 3rd one for the team which helped Himachal Pradesh to go into the break with a 3 goal lead. In the second half Uttrakhand tried making a comeback but its defense proved to be the weak point in the match today. The second half was yet again dominated by Himachal Pradesh as they continued their goal scoring spree and they pounded 4 more goals and winning the game 7-0.
In the Pool D match it was the Delhi team which had a field day against Gujarat as they went on to score 15 goals and without conceding a single goal. With 7 goals coming from Pooja and 3 goals pounded by Priya, Delhi had a good opening match. The goals started raining in the 4th minute when the team got a Penalty Corner and was converted by Pooja. For the ext 15 minutes the defense of Gujrat held eh Delhi team back without conceding a single goal, but in the 19th minute Priya pounded the ball through the goal keeper which gave Delhi another goal lead. From here there was no looking back for Delhi as they scored back to back goals and going into the break they were leading 5 goals to 0.
In the second half the story was no different and the team upped the ante by reducing the goal scoring duration and in the 40th minute the team scored its 6th goal. By the end of the game Delhi added another 9 goals, giving them a convincing win of 15-0.
