11 March 2014: Hosts Uttar Pradesh opened their account on a winning note by defeating Odisha 5-2 on the opening day of the 4th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A) played at Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Lucknow.

In other matches of the day, Jharkhand and Indian Railways defeated their respective opponents Bhopal and Food Corporation of India by the same scorelines of 3-0. While Tamil Nadu got walk over as Andaman & Nicobar failed to show up in Pool D.

Uttar Pradesh dominated the first half of the game by 2-0 with one field goal by Amir Khan in the 10th minute and Diwakar Ram converting a penalty corner in the 33rd minute of the game.

Going into the second half, Uttar Pradesh continued its dominance by keeping the attack on the opponents. In the 44th minute Uttar Pradesh scored its 3rd goal through Ajit Pandey. Hockey Odisha tried making a comeback and it was Amon Mirash Tirkey who in the 48th minute scored the 1st goal for the team taking the score to 3-1. Though Uttar Pradesh had other plans and they struck again in the 48th minute and it was Diwarkar Ram who contributed for his team this time. Hockey Odisha tried to reduce the margin and struck its second goal in the 61st minute but it was too late for them to make a comeback in the match and the game ended with a score of 5-2.

Earlier, Jharkhand scooped away the match from Hockey Bhopal by 3-0 in Pool C. The first half of the match witnessed both the teams struggling to open the account but failed to do and by the end of first half the score card was 0-0. In the second half, Jharkhand increased it momentum of attack and it was Birshu Bhengra who took it upon himself to do the scoring for the team. All 3 goals came through penalty corners which came within a span of eleven minutes in the 57th, 63rd and 68th minute. This helped Jharkhand steal the match from Hockey Bhopal 3-0.

In another match, Food Corporation of India failed to impress with their skills as they lost their match of Pool D to Railways by 3-0. All goals by Railway were penalty corners and were scored in the 23rd 35th and 54th minute of the game. While 2 goals came in the first half and one goal was scored in the second half. Where, Food Corporation of India showed good potential in their very first match by restricting the veterans from scoring any field goals, they gave away the match through penalty corners.
