03 December 2013: England Hockey reveals its strategy for 2013-17 and beyond.
Over recent months England Hockey has been developing and refining its strategy for the future of hockey in this country. With UK Sport and Sport England’s investment, and growing commercial revenues, England Hockey is ambitious about how it can take the sport forward in this Olympic cycle and beyond. There is a clear vision, a powerful philosophy and five core objectives that all those who have a role in advancing the sport can unite behind.
The vision is for England to be ‘A Nation Where Hockey Matters’. England Hockey aspires to deepen the passion of those who play, follow and deliver the sport by providing the best possible environments, the best possible experiences, and the support which clubs and deliverers of the game need. Meanwhile, reaching out to new audiences is also an important aim.

England Hockey’s Chief Executive Sally Munday commented: “This is an exciting time for hockey. We’ve won important bids for international tournaments in the coming years, and we have a real clarity of thought about how we can translate that into future participation to help our sport flourish.”
England Hockey believes in a ‘virtuous circle’ underpinning the sport – at a fundamental level, international success drives an increase in visibility for the sport. With the right systems in place, this fuels a growth in participation which drives further international success, and thereon the circle continues.
Delivering success on the international stage stimulates the nation’s pride in their hockey team, and by hosting international events England Hockey will attract interest from spectators, sponsors and broadcasters alike. With its recent successful bids for upcoming major international tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup in 2018, the ambition of England Hockey as a governing body is clear. There is now a major international event in England every year until 2018.
The Olympic legacy venue the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is being developed to play host to these events on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, giving a platform for maximum exposure and a top-level facility for spectators and players alike.
The visibility that comes from these events will inspire followers of all ages to follow in the footsteps of their heroes and take up the sport, if the right opportunities are presented to meet their needs, and this gives an opportunity for the game to flourish as the younger participants can progress through the talent pathways to fuel further international success.
Underpinning all this is the infrastructure which makes the sport function. Volunteers, coaches, officials, clubs and facilities are paramount to enabling the game to thrive. England Hockey will lead, support, counsel, focus and motivate the ‘Hockey Nation’ and work tirelessly towards its vision.
To summarise, England Hockey’s five key objectives for the coming years are to:
1. Grow Participation
2. Deliver International Success
3. Increase the visibility of hockey
4. Enhance infrastructure
5. Be a strong and respected Governing Body
This philosophy shows the importance of the relationships between international and grassroots, and between commercial and community.
