Jalandhr, October 18: Backed by a vociferous crowd, Punjab & Sind Bank beat defending champions Indian Oil to win the 30th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament 2013 at the Burlton Park Stadium here late this evening.
In the final see-saw battle, the bank men outpaced and outsmarted Indian Oil by two goals to one (2-1) to lift the trophy besides pocketing Rs 5 lakh, a winner’s cheque. Sarvanjit Singh, the Captain of Punjab & Sind Bank, scored both the goals for his side, who was later adjudged as player of the tournament.
Final was played on very fast note. In the very first minute of the play Punjab & Sind Bank mounted pressure and their captain International star Sarvanjit Singh scored the field goal from top of the circle to earn early lead for his side. In the 19th minute and 21st minute Indian Oil missed two penalty corners. In the 27th minute Indian Oil scored the equalizer on their third penalty corner, when Sunil Yadav found the target. At half time both teams were locked at 1-1.
After the change of ends, both the teams raided each others’ territory. In 46th minute when International Umpire G S Sangha awarded penalty corner in favour of Punjab & Sind Bank, the situation went out of hand and it took little time to get the game started. In the process, Olympian and Ex Indian Captain Prabjot Singh was red carded. But Punjab & Sind Bank failed to utilize the opportunity as they wasted that penalty corner. With just four minutes to the hooter, Punjab & Sind Bank got penalty stroke and captain Sarvanjit Singh scored the winning goal for the Bank (2-1).
