Jalandhar, Oct 5: The 30th edition of the prestigious IndianOil SERVO Surjit Hockey Tournament will be played from October 9 at the Olympian Surjit Singh polytan turf Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park. A total of 16 teams will be participating in the tournament which offers a total of Rs. 7,75,000/- as prize money.
The tournament is organized every year by the Surjit Hockey Society to keep the name of Ex-Olympian Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa alive who lost his life in a fatal car accident near Jalandhar on January 7th, 1984, while fighting hard for up-liftment of the National Game of Hockey in our Country.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar Mr. Varun Roozam, IAS, who is also the President of the Surjit Hockey Society, the 30th edition of the tournament would be played on knockout-cum-league basis. 5 teams have been placed in Knockout-cum-Qualifying Round while 11 teams including one foreign team have been seeded directly into quarter-final league. One teams will qualify for league from the Knock Out-cum-Qualifying Round Matches. Mostly, all the matches of the tournament will be played under flood lights and no gate entry money will be charged from the spectators who will come to witness the game of hockey.
As in the past 22 years, this year also, the Asia’s largest and leading Maharatna Oil Company IndianOil Corporation Limited will be the main sponsor of the tournament. He further informed that this year the total Cash Prize Money has been enhanced from Rs. 6.25 lacs to Rs. 7.75 lacs. Now, the winner team will get cash prize of Rs. 5.00 lacs instead of Rs. 3.50 lacs whereas the runners up team will be pocketed Rs. 2.50 lacs. The multinational gym company Gold’s Gym, Jalandhar, CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar and Uppal Hospitality Group (UHG) of Hong Kong will be the co-sponsors of the tournament. The Cash Award of Rs. 5.0 lacs to the Winner team is sponsored by USA based NRI Amolak Singh Ghakhal, Chairman, Gold’s Gym, Jalandhar, the Runners’ up cash award of Rs. 2.5 lacs has been sponsored by Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, Chairman of the CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar while the Sports Kits/Scholarships worth Rs. 2.5 lacs to budding players are sponsored by the Mr. Kuldip Singh Uppal of UHG, Hong Kong. As in the past, the best player of the tournament will get Mohinder Singh Tut Memorial Award along with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. This prize is Sponsored by Ranbir Singh Rana Tut, Mr. Roozam Added.
According to Sub Divisional Magistrate, Jalandhar-I, Mr. Iqbal Singh Sandhu, who is the honorary organizing secretary of tournament that two Pakistani teams namely, Punjab-XI (Men & Women) Lahore have confirmed their participation in the tournament but their visas are still in pipeline. The final participation of both the said Pak teams can only be confirmed after they get their visas. If teams get visas, apart from the Pak men team, there will be 3 Matches Test Series between Punjab-XI- (Pakistan) and Punjab-XI-(India) Women teams will be organised during the tournament days. 16 teams including Last Year’s Champion IndianOil, Mumbai and Runners up Bharat Petroleum, Mumbai will take part in this 10 days hockey bonanza. The other 13 top Indian teams Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi, Border Security Force (BSF), Punjab National Bank, Delhi, Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Delhi, Cops of Signal, Army-XI, Mumbai-XI, Indian Air Force, Delhi, Indian Navy, Mumbai, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Punjab Police, Indian Overseas Bank, Bangalore and Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL), Patiala which will take part to exhibit their skills.
Under the “Watch Surjit Hockey-Win ALTO Car-Listen Daljit Dosanjh” slogan, this year Surjit Hockey Society has also decided to award ALTO Car, Motor Cycles, Refrigerators etc. to the spectators, who will come to witness the Surjit Hockey matches. The main idea is to attract & to create more interest amongst the general public for our national game of Hockey. The spectators will get daily lucky coupons till Oct. 18 at the entry gate of the stadium while players will be issued the lucky coupons on the day of their first match. This ALTO Car has been sponsored by USA Based, leading farmer & transporter, known as Tut Brothers. The lucky draw for the Cars and other prizes will be held on Oct. 18, soon after the final match.
Arrangements have been made for the LIVE telecast of both the Semi Finals & Final Match of the tournament on PTC Channels on 17 and 18 of October, respectively. All India Radio, Jalandhar will also relay the ‘Ball-to-Ball‘ running commentary of the final match. Renowned Punjabi Folk Singer & Actor Mr. Diljit Dosanjh will entertain the spectators before the start of the final match on Oct. 18. NRI Mr. Gary Johal (Jandiala) of Canada has sponsored the cultural programme. On the inaugural day of the tournament, there will be a World Famous Martial Arts (Gatka) Show by Bir Khalsa Dal Group.
Mr. K.D. Bhandari, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Cooperation), Punjab will inaugurate tournament on 9th October, 2013 while Chief Minster Punjab Mr. Parkash Singh Badal would give away the prizes to the finalist on October 18 and Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia Revenue Minister Punjab will preside over the function whereas Mr. Pargat Singh MLA, Jalandhar Cantt., Dr. Diljit Singh Cheema, MLA, Rup Nagar and Mr. Sudeb Gupta, Executive Director, IOCL will be the Guest of Honour during the final of the tournament. Apart from this, Madan Mohan Mittal, Mr. Bhagat Chuni Lal, Mr. Anil Joshi, Mr. Ajit Singh Kohar, Mr. Sarwan Singh Phillour & Mr. Parminder Singh Dhindsa (All Cabninet Minsters), Mr. Pawan Kumar Tinu, Mr. Som Parkash, Sohan Singh Thandal & mr.
