3 September 2013: Indian junior men’s hockey was announced today for the 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup to be played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia from 22-29 September 2013.
The six nation tournament will feature Argentina, England, India, Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan. India finished as runners-up in the last edition of the tournament played in 2012.
The new look squad will be captained Midfielder Manpreet Singh while forward Affan Yousuf will be the Vice-Captain for the 3rd edition of Sultan of Johor Cup, which is an annual under-21 men’s invitational tournament.
Looking at the new team, it looks like that selectors are looking to try out as many as possible players before all important quadrennial event, Junior World Cup 2013, which will hosted by India in New Delhi from 6th-15th December. Thus, have left out quite a few players who had gone to Europe Tour of Junior team to give exposure to few others.
The 18 member squad and 8 standbys were selected by Selectors B P Govinda, Syed Ali, Dr. R P Singh alongwith Coaches Gregg Clark and Baljeet Singh Saini in the presence of Government Observer Harbinder Singh in the trials held at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi on 28-29 August 2013.
Before departing for Malaysia, the junior men team will have their preparatory camp at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi from 7-17 September 2013.
