Pakistan crushed Chinese-Taipei while hosts Malaysia came back from 2 goals down to beat Japan in the concluding games of Pool A at the 9th Asia Cup. With these results Pakistan and Malaysia qualified for Friday’s semi-finals, while Japan and Chinese-Taipei will play for 5th-8th place classification (Detailed schedule and results here).
Asian Hockey Giants, Pakistan and India, either one of them will miss the bus to the Hague, have outperformed other teams till now in Ipoh, where winner takes all to book the tickets to the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, to be played next year in June.
The Green Shirts dominated their pool to top the pool with 3 wins of 3 matches, followed by Malaysia who lost to Pakistan in pool stage.
Pakistan conceded only one goal in the pool games in the match against hosts Malaysia, which they won by 4-1. The Asian Powerhouse of Hockey, Pakistan had recorded a 7-0 victory over Japan on the first day of tournament while today round off pool stage with a big win 13-0 against Chinese-Taipei.
Hosts Malaysia, who are coached by South African Paul Ravington, turned around their last pool game against Japan from 0-2 down to win it 4-2. The fighting Malaysians saw themselves 0-2 in first 8 minutes of the game against Japan and fought back from there equalize before half time and scored 2 more goals after the change of ends to stay in contention for the title. Earlier in the pool stage, Malaysia defeated Chinese-Taipei 10-2 on the opening day of the tournament before going down to Pakistan (1-4) in their 2nd pool game.
Pool B games will concluded tomorrow (28th Aug) when India face Bangladesh and Korea take on Oman. India is likely to top the Pool B followed by Korea, thus setting up repeat semi-finals of Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou.
